Conquering the Sierras

by (Moabdave)
1903-1940Conquering the Sierras

Conquer the Sierra Nevada. Two companies have tried, can you do better?

The biggest challenge on the Central Pacific portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad (now the Southern Pacific line) was crossing the Sierra Nevada of California.

Five routes were considered, three seriously. The constructed route crested at Donner Pass, named for a party stranded there for the winter of 1848. Of the other alternatives, the Feather River Route was given the most serious consideration, as it featured a maximum grade of 1.2%. However, it was about 65 miles longer from end-to-end, and over 120 miles longer to Reno, Nevada, where the just discovered Comstock Lode meant a rush was on.

Later, several railroad companies considered building one of the alternative routes across the Sierra Nevada, to be able to access California without doing business with the Southern Pacific. However, most decided it was suicide to spend that much money on a route with established competition. The Denver and Rio Grande Western was the only company crazy enough to to it. They lost access to California when the Union Pacific (their main rival) combined with the Southern Pacific. The D&RG financed the Western Pacific Railroad to build the Feather River Route. The Western Pacific, as predicted by most, struggled its entire life, always playing second fiddle to the larger and more established Southern Pacific.

You are the chair of the Western Pacific. You must do what the real Western Pacific could not.

In real life, as more powerful engines became available, the Feather River Route's lone advantage (lesser grade) became less important. However, the line experienced a renaissance in the 1990s and 2000s, when double-stacked intra-modal containers became popular. The Feather River Route could accommodate them, but the Donner Pass line had to be almost completely rebuilt, which was completed around 2008-9.

CONDITIONS:
Bronze: You must build your own Sacramento-Reno line via the cities of Oroville, Quincy, Portola and Stead.
Silver: You must haul more cargo to Reno than the Southern Pacific.
Gold: The Western Pacific must acquire the Southern Pacific and be the only surviving company.

You have until 1940.

The never-built Yuba Pass alternative is also available for building (via Nevada City, Downieville, Sierraville & Truckee). This is optional, but may help you win Silver.

Crystal Cotton Revisited

by Richard (Orange46) Lake & Ruth (GrandmaRuth) Billheimer
1845-1985Crystal Cotton Revisited

There are lots of farms and ranches trying to get their stuff east.

Can you help by laying down a rail network connecting them to the ports and eastern gateway cities.

In the 1840's, a revolution came about with the production of new agricultural machines. Now, the problem is to get all of this production east. One way is by water, either through the ports of the Great Lakes or via the Mississippi River. The other is by railroad, via eastern railroad interchanges. Your goal is to link up the Mississippi River cities to the eastern interchanges and ship lots of cargo.

To get any medals, you will need to ship cotton bales, bulk wheat and processed meat to the eastern interchanges. Cotton will be baled and called crystal in a Memphis warehouse, wheat will be bulked and called ammo in St. Louis and meat will be processed and called weapons in Chicago.

You have 50 years to accomplish any of the following:

Bronze - Ship 250 loads of either ammunition, weapons or crystals to the eastern railroad interchanges.

Silver - Ship 250 loads of two of the Bronze cargoes.

Gold - Ship all three of the Bronze cargoes, while also delivering 250 loads of corn to St. Louis, 250 loads of produce to Chicago and anything else that might be demanded of you.

Although there is always talk of eminent disaster, this does not deter you from becoming the foremost CEO of the transportation industry.

The State of Alaska, not entirely pleased with the lack of expansion of the existing railroad companies, is encouraging you (George Train) to start a new rail line. The people and businesses of Alaska are hoping that you will provide for statewide travel and tranportation of goods.

Dispatcher Wanted

by Richard (Orange46) Lake
1879-1919Dispatcher Wanted

Must be able to build a new RR while dispatching many trains during difficult times for demanding stockholders.

Long hours, low salary, but there is a slight chance for gold or silver upon retirement.

Build a North American Railroad Empire.

For Bronze: Have a company book value of $50 million after 40 years, and don't accept too many government grants.

For Silver: You need a company book value of $65 million.

For Gold: Do not accept any government grants, and have a company book value of $75 million.

If you run low on cash, and don't need the Gold, just wait for government handouts. Uncle Sam will keep you running.

Finally, be aware that accumulating too much cash can cause a stockholder backlash.

East Coast Steel Paradoxon

by (Okke)
1860-1880East Coast Steel Paradoxon

Version 1.0 - Map editing and scenario by Okke.

The East coast of the US just started to get used to railroad services but, due to a tragic mistake, that service didn't last long. Now is the time to do it over, and do it better!

Ah, there you are Mr. Doe! Yes, I wanted to speak to you about a rather delicate matter. I'm sure you know about the problems we had here in the East with the railroads. Yes, they were doing fine, until it apearred that the steel of which they made their tracks was of poor quality. So poor, that it became simply useless in a matter of years. Only a small part of the 'Go West' railroad apearred to be durable.

As chairman of J. Doe industries I'm sure you understand how serious this is. Nou, we have stuffed your business account with a litle extra. We figured that a litle railroad would fit your business just fine. You should know that we have sort of protected the 'Go west' railroad, since it is the last one running. In Syracuse is a nice station still standing. You can have it. Well, best of luck Mr. Doe, and make us all proud!

BRONZE:
Connect Watertown to Williamsport, and make sure New York is connected with Rochester (by any comapny)

SILVER:
Same as bronze, plus a PNW of 20 milion.

GOLD:
Be the sole surviving railroad, connecting Watertown with Elmira and New York with Rochester. You also need to heul at least 15 loads of steel.

Well go on, you only have 20 years!

East Florida

by Anders (arop) Pilgaard (R.I.P.)
1855-1915East Florida

Welcome to East Florida!

GEOGRAPHY: The Florida Peninsula is dominated by lowlands with swamps, lakes and forrests. The economy is mainly based on tourism, agriculture and some logging.

THIS SCENARIO: For technical reasons the famous railroad between Miami and Key West, an astonishing feat of engineering, is omitted in this scenario (The RRT3 bridges would make the line look like a roller coaster). The railroad was destroyed by a hurricane in 1935 and the remains were partly used when the highway to the Keys was built some years later. There are lots of small streams in Florida, but only the most important rivers are shown on the map. In the real world culverts or low bridges are used for crossing minor streams.

You have 60 years to achieve:

BRONZE: Connect Jacksonville with Tallahassee, Tampa and Miami. Your Company Book Value must be at least $50 million.

SILVER: Your CBV must be minimum $100 million, and with Jacksonville connections (as for bronze).

GOLD: As silver, but with a lifetime industrial profit of minimum $50 million.

1855-1915East Florida

Willkommen in Florida!

Develop your company as a regional power, and then see if you have what it takes to compete on the national and international stage.

It's your job to make a name for yourself, by connecting the Midwest agriculture to the east coast industry.

In each territory, the first time you haul 75 loads in one year you will receive 1 point.

You may gain bonuses in cash and lowered access costs by starting in Canada. Choosing the Midwest gives you slightly less cash and higher access fees. The Southeast and Upper South are not as challenging as Canada, but starting there can be difficult.

Electrification can be expensive, but fast and efficient for short runs. If the total electricity generated in a year is 200 Gigawatts or more, electric locos will be reasonably priced the next year (you do not have to own the plants).

Gilded Age - V2

by Porter (EPH) Hopson
1845-1875Gilded Age - V2

New England doesn't have much in the way of natural resources by the standards of the day. No cotton, rice, indigo or tobacco plantations here!

But you do have ice to trade for cotton, mills to weave textiles, distilleries for rum, and plenty of hard-working people. If you want to get rich, you'll have to make do with this.

What you need is a good way to bring in raw materials and ship out finished products. A whole continent awaits you, but it's faster right now to sail to Europe than walk to the Great Lakes! Rapid movement of passengers and bulk cargo will allow New England to industrialize and prosper.

Sounds like you need a rail road...

You have 30 years to build yourself a financial empire. But do be careful, these are some of the most eventful years in American history!

Bronze - Have at least 20 Victory Points in 1875.
Silver - Have at least 40 Victory Points in 1875.
Gold - Have at least 60 Victory Points before 1875.

You can earn victory points in a variety of ways. Connect cities, haul a lot of loads and make large profits and your company should do fine. An annual fast express speed will increase your score, as will a high personal net worth. There will be a dialog every year with details on this.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
You cannot build unconnected track.
You cannot resign, nor be removed as chairman.
You may not start more than one company.
You may not declare bankruptcy.

Goulds MoPac Empire

by Ray (OilCan) Albright
1876-1916GouldsMoPacEmpire

Jay Gould was a cunning and scheming capitalist who became the ninth richest American in history - mostly from his railroad tycooning.

Recreate the Gould Era of the Missouri-Pacific Railroad (1876-1915)

In 1876, Jay Gould gained controlling interest in the Missouri-Pacific Railroad (Mo-Pac). Step into Gould's shoes and rebuild his kingdom of railroad companies.

-:$:- Game Goals -:$:-
#1: Personal Net Worth of $200M (G), $100M (S), $50M (B)
#2: No rival railroad companies left on the map (G), 3 rivals left (S), 5 rivals left (B)
#3: Missouri-Pacific must remain on the map (not taken over by another company)
#4 No company debt at end of game (G,S)

-:$:- Game Conditions -:$:-
Nine rival railroads.
No multiple companies.
No train crashes.
40 years.

"Corporations are going, we are told, to destroy the country. But what would this country be but for corporations? Who have developed it? Corporations. Who transact the most marvelous business the world has ever seen? Corporations." - Jay Gould

How to Win This Game:

(1) Invest into industry early and heavily – add 1-3 city connections per year, saving most of your cash for industry.
(2) Invest personal cash into rival stocks steadily, targeting your first victims early in the game.
(3) Gradually takeover your rivals, don’t rush into this, use company cash to build your company first.

------------------------------------------------------
AT START OF GAME (WHILE GAME IS IN PAUSE)
Set the Mo-Pac dividend to 10cents.
Issue a bond.

Do some tycooning before the game clock starts.

Buy into Eagle Express RR – up to 16,000 shares, enough to take control.
Takeover chairmanship of Eagle.
Issue a bond for Eagle (this adds $500K to Mo-Pac).
Buy back all remaining stock in Eagle.
Return to Chairman of Mo-Pac.
Merge with Eagle at $2,500.
This should leave you with about $2.2M personal wealth .

Cairo-LR – Buy enough shares to gain control of the company.
Takeover chairmanship of Cairo-LR.
Do not buyback stock. Do not increase dividend.
Buy another train to serve all 4 stations (start at Jonesb)

Gulf Star – Buy enough shares to gain control of the company.
Takeover chairmanship.
Issue a bond.
Add large station at Galveston and connect to Houston. Add train, shed, tower.
Buyback 2K stock.
Do not increase dividend.

St. Louis–Iornton – takeover Chairmanship and buy back all remaining stock.

Return to Mo-Pac chairmanship.

Denver Transport – buy enough stock to bring up stock price to equal BVS (about 5K shares). This will hold your place in the company for a while.

Central Union – do the same, about 3K shares. Should have about $100K left in personal cash.

Build a textile mill in LA or ARK.
Connect New Orleans (large station) to Baton Rouge (medium stn). Start a train. (Wait to add shed & tower).

START GAME CLOCK

Add tower then shed to NO-BR route.
Add two more trains to St. Louis – Kansas City route.

SECOND YEAR --------------------------------------
Take out 3 bonds.
Use the bonds to invest into industry this year.
During year add two more cities to rail network, make Columbia one of the cities.

At start of year, look at Income Statements for all the companies to get an idea of who’s doing OK and who is doing poorly.
Buy stocks in “Other companies” first, then in companies you control.
Check stocks in July.
Go through entire list of companies each time.

NEXT YEAR AND SO ON --------------------------------------
Take out bonds.
Invest into industry mostly for first 10-15 years, or more.
Add cities to rail network, 1-3 per year.
Don’t connect to rivals unless they need financial support.

Follow stock practices started in second year. (buy back stock, pump up dividends)

Agree to all the underhanded schemes that might come along.

Great Northern

by Steve (Mobius) Lorenz
1879-1907Great Northern

To the restless Easterners they said 'go west young man'. For that was the place of adventure and the place to make one's fortune.

Build the northern transcontinental railroad and bind the East with the West. v1.7a

Between St. Paul and the Pacific Coast there existed a vast undeveloped territory, such that the western territories had varing degrees of allegiance to their governments in the east. A railroad link was essential to bind the two together. This was no small task, as determined men were needed to build it. James J. Hill was one of those determined men who took up the challenge to build a railroad across this land. The Great Northern Railroad was James Hill's "great adventure".

Game Length: 28 years.

BRONZE:
1. Haul 10 loads of coffee to the Duluth/Superior ports or the Port Arthur rail link.
2. Haul 10 loads of cotton to the ports on the West Coast.

SILVER:
In addition, have a Company Book Value of $25 million and a Personal Net Worth of $15 million.

GOLD:
1. Haul 30 loads of coffee to the Duluth/Superior ports or Port Arthur rail link.
2. Haul 30 loads of cotton to the ports on the West Coast.
3. Have a Company Book Value of $50 million and Personal Cash of $20 million.

--------------
Note - You cannot add Canadian and US load counts.
Restrictions: Only 500 sections of track can be built in a year.

Great Northern
Scenario Map for Railroad Tycoon 3

In 1879 between the eastern most cities of United States and Canada and those of the Pacific Coast existed a vast undeveloped and untamed land. Several railroads conquered this land, none was greater than the Great Northern.

The Great Northern was founded by James Hill, known and remembered as "The Empire Builder." Throughout his years of creating, encouraging and directing, Mr. Hill's creed was development of the resources of the region the railway served.

The game can be played as either American or Canadian railroads. Some limited over the border rail building is tolerated, but too much will be taxed.

Historic passes have marked by lighter ground to help negotiate the narrow valleys.

Resources:
Bakeries do also represent the need of grain to feed horses.
Breweries also represent mills. Since there is no food cargo, alcohol is used instead.
Livestock arrives at Pacific ports, as this represents the fishing industry.
