LA & L.A.

by (Stoker)
1870-1895LA & L.A.

Build a Railroad Empire from the ground up, and fulfill Uncle P.P.s' dream of connecting Louisiana and Los Angeles!

You have inherited a Hotel and a sizable fortune from your grandfathers friend , New Orleans hotel mogul Phineas P. Argentsacs, known to you since childhood as "Uncle P.P." Also willed to you are vast real estate holdings in a small unkown village in California called "Los Angeles". Uncle P.P. had an eye for a bargain, and he knew this land would someday be worth a fortune.

Your task is to develop this "worthless" land into valuable real estate by building a rail system and hauling in the needed materials and settlers to develop this area and thus "LA & L.A. Inc." is formed by you for this purpose. With the talented staff of Uncle P.Ps' hotel , you will turn a handsome profit from all hotels, restaurants, and taverns that you own.

Uncle P.P. had friends and business partners far and wide, and for a couple of years you will be able to use these contacts to purchase and build businesses at a discount.

* You will recieve a percentage of all industrial profits from your company if the cash is on hand at years end to pay it, which will reduce as you expand your empire and delegate more and more duties involved in running these businesses. When you acquire a railroad all your attention will be required there and this bonus will stop.

* All government railroad charters are taken, and the only way to get one is to merge your company with an existing railroad company.

* You must amass $25 Million in personal cash and have a "shipshape" company with no debt.

* You have until the end of 1882 to link New Orleans and Los Angeles to qualify for the Gold.

* All the medals have the same haulage requirements, which are listed in the ledger. For Gold & Silver you have until the end of 1895, and until the end of 1900 for Bronze.

Good Luck!

Louisville & Nashville

by Lars (Lama) Maischak
1850-1875Louisville & Nashville

Build the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Survive competition, crises, and the Civil War to capture the largest market in the region by 1875.

Louisville's merchants are determined to capture the region south of the Ohio as their market, against the competition of Cincinnati and Evansville. With railroads, a huge territory far from navigable rivers is now ripe for commercial development.

You have until the end of 1874.

For Bronze, establish lines from Louisville to Nashville and Memphis.
For Silver, establish additional lines to Chattanooga and Atlanta.
For Gold, establish additional lines to St. Louis and Birmingham. Yours also must be the only surviving company.

To "establish a line" to a city, you must connect the city to Louisville, and have an income of $1,000,000 from hauling loads TO the terminus of the line. Your station MUST be located in the same state as the city (e.g., MO for St. Louis) for connections and deliveries to count!

Special Conditions:
- Every player can start one company only.
- Connected track building only.
- Credit rates are higher, reflecting the actual cost at the time.
- Beware of a volatile business climate!
- Tobacco is represented by coffee.

1850-1875Louisville & Nashville

Lower Michigan

1856-1935Lower Michigan

Railroading in Lower Michigan is very versatile, ranging from busy trunk lines in the densly populated South and commuter traffic around Chicago, to small rural or logging railroads in the sparsely populated northern part of the peninsula.

Prequalification: You must connect Detroit to Cleveland, Chicago, Grand Rapids, Ludington, Mackinaw, Saginaw and Traverse City before the end of 1895. If you fail doing that, the game is lost.

BRONZE: You must have a Company Book Value of $200 million, a Lifetime Industrial Profit of $100 million and a Player Net Worth of $50 million, by the start of 1936.

SILVER: You must have a CBV of $400 million, LIP of $200 million and PNW of $75 million, by the start of 1936.

A builder's map. No lose event. Designed to reduce flow of cargo. All 12 ports/warehouses activated.

Cargo supply and player cash increased. Costs of building industries reduced by 80%. Aggressive AI's.

With the lower cost of industries, you will be leasing the land for the industries. Some shipping companies are on strike. Both wagon and water shippers. They will return to work when you build indistries.

Bronze - Connect Memphis, St. Louis, and Indianapolis.

Silver - Connect all the cities for Bronze, as well as Chicago and Detroit. You'll also need a personal net worth of at least 5 million.

Gold - Same requirements as Silver, except you will need to connect Minneapolis to your network as well, and have a PNW of at least 15 million.

New France

Neufrankreich

by Ned Fumpkin
1830-?New France

New France as it was in 1730.

The New World is full of opportunity. Rich in resources, short of industry. Be careful not to create too many enemies, though.

You have been sent by the King of France to build an iron ribbon across New France, and bring industry to the New World.

As you land at Quebec, you are greeted by a humble habitant who will help you adjust to this New World...

"Bonjour mon ami!" he says, "I'm afraid that I have some terrible news. Lousiana and Acadia have broken away from France, and it will be up to you to reclaim them for the King. You will need to connect Quebec to Fort Orleans and Port Royal.

A little about this world: there are no banks here so you cannot issue bonds. What few industries exist are not for sale, but you can build your own. The people like to get paid on time, so if you go into the red more than $500,000 they will hunt you down. Your tracks must also be connected.

One thing you should know... this world changes people. You may discover in a few years that your mind is changed and perhaps you seek different objectives.

Keep an open mind because there is no second place, but many roads to Gold."

1830-?Neufrankreich

Neufrankreich, wie es im Jahre 1730 war.

Die neue Welt ist voller Chancen. Reich an Ressourcen, knapp an Industrie.

Noble Experiments

Ein stattlicher Versuch

by Ruth (Grandma Ruth) Billheimer
1920-1941Noble Experiments

Between the two great World Wars, America tackled social problems with bold legislation - first the noble experiment of Prohibition and then the almost-revolutionary economics of the New Deal. And of course someone was there to make a profit!

Like almost everyone else in 1920's Chicago, you are out to make money, have a good time, and evade the law - not necessarily in that order!

Your objective is simply to make the most cash you can by the time America goes to war at the end of 1941. The only restriction is that you can't build industry, but I would also suggest you don't put your trust in banks or stockbrokers in these troubled times.

To win, you must have at least:
- $50m for Gold
- $25m for Silver
- $10m for Bronze

1920-1941Ein stattlicher Versuch

North America - Early Discovery

by Dean (howdi) Smith
1854-?North America - Early Discovery

With much of the huge and diverse North American continent at your feet, build an Empire and try to capture up to four prestigious awards along the way.

The continent is discovered much earlier, thanks to the Vikings who actually settled at Aux Au Meadows in Newfoundland Canada, around 1000 AD. Nearly 500 years before the first sailing of Columbus!

But unlike history, they don't mysteriously up and leave after a few short years and return to Greenland, and Europe finds out about this new land hundreds of years sooner. In America, the Revolution occurs but slavery and the Civil War are avoided.

Starting from scratch, and with much of the huge and diverse North American continent at your feet, build your railroad into an empire. Try to capture up to four prestigious awards along the way. The coveted "Gold Spike Award" should be your ultimate goal, but may prove to be too ambitious for some time. So go for the "Silver", which is a great achievement in itself. You will be competing with up to 15 AI in an enhanced environment.

This scenario was designed to be played at the 'Hard' or 'Expert' level. You should start your company with no more than $1,500,000 combined player and outside investment, which is similar to what the AI begins with. More cash and/or less difficulty is considered giving yourself a handicap, but may be necessary until you gain more experience.

Starting date may be from 1841 to 1893 with a default of 1854, for 30-120 years.

Please establish your company, first track, stations and trains, etc before starting with the speed button. Refer to the Readme.txt for more detailed information on everything.

Credits to "K" for the original map and to "Orangexx" for his revisions.

Enjoy the scenario and good luck!

North American Railroad Sim

by Richard (Orange46) Lake
1829-2009North American Railroad Sim

Slowly build a North American Empire to last more than 165 years. You will need to be patient and willing to settle for less than gold. Only those willing to really manage a railroad and their industries need apply.

For Bronze: have lifetime profits of $100 million at the end of 2010, and don't accept too many government grants.

For Silver: you need lifetime profits of $300 million.

For Gold: connect 90 cities, do not accept any government grants, and have lifetime profits of at least $600 million at the end of 2009.

If you run low on cash in the early years and don't need the Gold, just wait for government handouts. Uncle Sam will keep you running. Finally, beware that accumulating too much cash can cause a stockholder backlash.

Northeast Corridor

Der Nord-Ost Korridor

by Lars (Lama) Maischak
1930-1950Northeast Corridor

After the stock market crash, take control of a railroad and make it the most important carrier along the North-East Corridor - between New York City and Washington, DC.

The crash of the stock market has thrown US railroads into crisis, and offers an opportunity for investors to restructure the industry. Take over and consolidate existing railroads, and gain dominance of the lucrative passenger market in the north-east.

You have 20 years to win a medal. For Bronze, you need 80 points; for Silver 90 points; and for Gold 100 points.

You need a continuous line from Washington, DC to the New York metro area to win any medal. For Gold, you also have to build a station in Manhattan.

You gain points at the end of every year, based on the record of the company you own at that time. When you switch companies, you will keep the points you earned. Points are awarded yearly to:

- the company that has hauled the most passengers TO a city in the current year (2 for New York Metro, and 1 each for Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington).

- the company that has hauled the most passengers FROM a city in the current year (2 for New York Metro, and 1 each for Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington).

- the company with the highest average express speed in the current year (2 points).

Railroad technology made rapid progress in the 1930s. You can upgrade your engines and service in several ways. Upgrades will only be available to the company that invested in them, but a merger will make them available to the buyer.

ENGINES:
You can choose ONE of three fast engines with high passenger appeal: The GG1 (electric), the Mallard (steam), OR the Zephyr (diesel).

To pick an engine, open the 'territories' tab on the company detail screen, and scroll down the list to 'ENGINES'. Click on the engine you wish to make available. This will cost you $500,000. In the case of a merger, the choice made by the buyer overrides that made by the railroad that is taken over. If the buyer had not yet invested in any of these engines, he will be able to use the engine chosen by the company he takes over. You can tell what engine a company uses by checking their territory rights.

IMPROVEMENTS: You can gain these improvements by purchasing access to a territory.

- Air-conditioning your trains will increase train maintenance by 5%. Passengers who use your trains will pay a surcharge.

- Pullman Service will increase your income from hotels, restaurants, and taverns by 20%, for an increase in overhead by 5%.

- Track water-pans enable moving trains to take on water. Less frequent watering stops will boost your average speed if you use steam engines, but track maintenance costs rise 5%.

You can undo these investments by placing a piece of track in the right spot in the very lower right corner of the map, in the ocean. Hover the cursor over the colored area and watch the display at the bottom of the screen. For example, to undo air-conditioning, place a piece of track in the 'air conditioning' territory. All changes take effect at the end of the year.

------------------
Note (Octber 2020): In the years since this scenario was made, it has been found that events which are meant to increase passgener revenue do not actually work (one of RT3's bugs). This means the air-conditioning option will only increase train maintenance cost, without providing any revenue benefit.

The North-East Corridor
by Lars Maischak, 2004.

Historical Background:
The North-East Corridor between the cities of New York and Washington, DC, has always had the most dense passenger traffic of all rail routes in the U.S. Before Amtrak, railroad companies competed fiercely for a share of this traffic. Since the 1880s, the Pennsylvania Railroad had been the market leader, followed by a joint operation between the Baltimore & Ohio, Reading, and Central of New Jersey Railroads.

In this scenario, the PRR never acquired the Baltimore, Wilmington, and Philadelphia RR; and the Camden & Amboy still exists. Virginia Central is a fictional company that represents southern railroads. PRR's extensions to Washington and New York – including the tunnel to Manhattan – remain yet to be built. The B&O's Baltimore-Philadelphia line, likewise, has not been built. As a result, the big engineering projects, mergers, and consolidations remain for the player to accomplish, in order to complete a line between New York and Washington, DC.

Time frame:
Single player -	20 years (1930-1949)
Multi-player -	25 years (1930-1954)

Players: Single or multi (up to 4 players); no AI.

This map is mainly designed for multi-player games, but can also be played in single player.

Restrictions: Players may not start any companies. No buying or building of industry.

Medal goals:
Single player: see map briefing.
Multi-player: have the most points after 25 years, and be the company that has hauled the most passengers overall.

In single player, up to 12 points will be awarded per year. In multi-player, up to 14 points per year.

Strategy:
This scenario has two components: a stock-market game, and a railroad-operating game. At the beginning, you can either buy a majority of stock in a small company and take it over; or buy small amounts of stock in multiple companies. In the second case, ignore the shortlines and buy major railroad stock. If the value of your stock rises enough, you may be able to take over one of the larger railroads.

If you begin with a small company, you may be able to pay yourself enough of a dividend to then take over a larger one, and can then have it acquire your original, smaller company.

Whatever else you do, make sure your first company is profitable enough to pay you a dividend, which is essential for future acquisitions.

You should begin early on to collect points. Consider connecting your track to other railroads, to attract through passenger traffic. Connecting other railroads to each other, and to your own railroad, will also mean significantly higher income for yourself. Your competitors will pay you for using your connecting track.

Separate freight from express trains early on, to get at least the two annual points for the highest express speed. Once your company gets larger, and connects more urban centers, do not ignore local traffic. For example, hauling local passengers between Paterson, Newark, and Hoboken will help you to become the railroad that hauls the most passengers to and from the New York Metropolitan Area.

In multi-player, gaining access to Manhattan means tapping a large market for passenger traffic, and can put you ahead of others in the New York Metro Area.

The Mallard engine, combined with track water-pans, short consists, and long, straight runs, will almost certainly earn you the two annual points for the highest express speed. In single-player, the Zephyr or GG1 will do, since the AI-run railroads will never buy any of the faster engines. The GG1 can pull longer consists at a high speed, but requires high investments in electrification.

1930-1950Der Nord-Ost Korridor

Northern Arizona Railroad

by Gary (AZ Rail Rat) Reames
1880-?Northern Arizona Railroad

In 1866, the year after the Civil War, the U.S. Congress authorized building of another Transcontinental Railroad along the 35th parallel.

The line would meet existing lines in Missouri, cross through Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle and the Southwest in northern New Mexico and Arizona, to meet existing railroads in California.

The St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad, known as the Frisco Line, took up the challenge and the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad Company was born. Though track from the Missouri state line to Sapulpa, Oklahoma, just out from Tulsa, was built, financial difficulties proved the Frisco could not do it alone.

Lewis Kingman, after building much of the Santa Fe lines in the rugged mountains of New Mexico connecting to Kansas, was called upon and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe partnered with the Frisco in the Atlantic & Pacific venture.

Ahead lies the challenge of northern Arizona, and the trail leading Kingman into railroad history.

Northern Nevada

by (Moabdave)
1867-1914Northern Nevada

Build the major rail lines that connected Nevada's mines to the world's produce.

The planner of every transcontinental line, be it telegraph, railroad, pipeline or highway has asked one question: "What do we do when we get to Nevada?"

Sparsely populated, almost completely dry, a seemingly never ending repetition of large desert valleys, separated by steep and snowy north-south mountain ranges, it's certainly not anybody's first choice to build a railroad. However, if you want to cross the United States, there's a good chance you'll have to cross.

Three rail lines have completely crossed the state. The first was Central Pacific's portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, depicted here as the Southern Pacific line. The second was in southern Nevada, built by the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake, more commonly known as the Union Pacific line (not shown). The third and final trans-Nevada line was built by the Western Pacific Railroad.

Bronze: Complete the Southern Pacific line and all of its branch lines by 1914.

Silver: Complete the Southern Pacific line by the end of 1869, the Western Pacific by the end of 1909, and all branch lines by 1914.

Gold: Silver, plus the Western Pacific must be bult as a separate company, and have the highest book value by 1914.

Hints:
The game is set up such that most lines can be built by the same company as the main they branch from, or by starting a separate company. There are advantages to each method. To win gold you must build the SP empire from scratch, then build up a competitor, so remember to not build the SP empire so big it cannot be beaten. Access to the necessary territories will be given to you at the proper time in history, or can be purchased for an early start.

Northern Ontario

by David (Proudcanadian) Kettles
1900-1930Northern Ontario

It's 1900, and Northern Ontario still remains a desolate, isolated place. Can you unite it, and bring it to glory?

In reality, by 1900 Northern Ontario was crossed by five railroads: the Canadian Pacific, Canadian Northern, National Transcontinental, Ontario Northland, and Algoma Central. Alas, they can't all be recreated on this map, so you'll have to start afresh.

At this point, Northern Ontario is still isolated and not industrialized. People feel that a railroad could all bring them together. Think you know what it takes to tame the North? You have 30 years to complete the following.

BRONZE
Connect the five major cities of the North: Sault Ste. Marie (the Canadian one), Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins, and Thunder Bay.

SILVER
Have a lifetime industry profit of $10 million, and also connect to Moosonee, and to Churchill (in Manitoba).

GOLD
Have a lifetime industry profit of $20 million, a company book value of $60 million, and also link up to Duluth, Minnesota and Alpena, Michigan. Also, you must haul 20 loads each of goods, meat, and clothing to Churchill.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
You may not resign as chairman.
You may not start multiple companies.
You may not build unconnected track.

Good luck, and watch out for moose.

North South Corridor

Nord-Süd Korridor

by Porter (EPH) Hopson
1920-1950North South Corridor

Build a great North-South Corridor, connecting Chicago to New Orleans and Mobile.

The central part of the USA has too many railroads! Too many small, inefficient ones, that is. Too many lines that serve the same cities while rate wars cripple their profits. What JP Morgan did for the eastern railroads must happen to those of the Mississippi River valley: consolidation and ruthless efficiency will be the watchwords of this generation. Without reorganization it is doubtful that some will survive.

You need to buy enough stock to take over the chairmanship of a company. Then you will need to expand, by construction or merger, until you serve some or all of these five cities: Chicago, St Louis, Memphis, Mobile and New Orleans.

Having the most passenger hauls to or from the cities of Chicago, St Louis, Memphis, Mobile and New Orleans will determine the number of points you receive each year: 1 point for passengers going to or coming from each city, for 10 possible points each year.

GOLD - 150 points before 1951.
SILVER - 75 points by 1951.
BRONZE - 40 points by 1951.
DEFEAT - less than 40 points by 1951.

You may not start a new company, or build or buy industries other than hotels, post offices, restaurants and taverns.

Preset camera views may be useful to you. Press 1, 2, 3 or 4 on your keyboard to try them out.

Was J.P.
