Cracked disc

About 2 years ago my disc 1 (install disc) physically cracked, I contacted the nice folks over at Poptop and was told that I would have to send everything in to them(box manual discs), along with $30 for a replacement. I figured the hell with it, I have all the stuff, Ill just get a copy if I ever need to re-install and since I still have an intact disc 2, I won't need a no cd crack. Well yesterday I took my play disc (disc 2) out of the drive, theres now a crack in it. So far it is still playable, but I sometimes have to try starting the game up several times before it stops giving me the wrong disc message.;

Looks like soon I won't be able to play 1.06 anymore... is there a way to fix a cracked disc (that is a disck with a physical crack in it)? I'm inclined to think no, but I have little or no experience with this kind of problem.

I don't have an answer to the cracked disk dilemma but it sure does give new meaning to using a cracked copy

I have a back up copy of RT3 if one gets damaged. You should be able to find a reasonably priced copy on the all powerful Internet.

I actually just bought a "backup" copy of RT3 at Target for $9.99. I believe I've seen it at Walmart also. (Somehow I lost my original disc). So I agree, you should be able to find another copy without too much hassle.

Ya but I figure since this copy cost $70.00, that hopefully I can fix this one. Like I said, I dunno if a disc repair is possible, but if it is, I'd consider it. I haven't seen it anywhere near me, I checked EB Games Walmart and Zellers... nada.

Your machine must put out a lot of heat.

If all else fails, I would try a small dab of super glue at the outer edge to keep the crack in control.
Make sure it is not warped when you glue it. The laser should see through the glue if it should spread.

I recently decided to buy a 2nd copy of RT3 so I could legally load it on a 2nd computer - and have a backup disc in case the first one got scratched. Thought I should do it while the game was still available commercially. I looked in the usual computer game stores and couldn't find it. So I ended up ordering one on the web. I think I used the amazon.ca or .com site. Price was about $10. All I got was the cd, no booklets or charts, but I still have those from my original purchase. Get 'em while you can, tycoons. !#2bits#!

I am almost positive I got mine at Target. No box, jewel case only, and for that reason it was in the "jewel case games" section, which is almost always huge and unsorted. RT3 just happened to be at the front of a row so I got a little lucky. If you have a Target nearby I'd say definitely check the jewel case games display.

Best Buy usually has a pretty big jewel case games display also.

EDIT:

Just did a quick search and found it online:

J&R computer world: http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process ... AILROADTY3

$7.97 plus shipping...not bad!

Also, it looks like a few Amazon Marketplace sellers have it available.

I'm pretty good at that type of stuff and the answer is NO, you can not fix a cracked disc successfully. They can be resurfaced and I have a resurfacer that I used after my fire to salvage a few discs but fixing a cracked one, sorry.

I also saw RT3 at Target just the other day for $9.99. !*th_up*!

Cap'n - If you're interested in getting a new copy of RRT3, I just found this.

http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php ... ames&cc=US

$9.95 for RT3. $4.95 for RT2 Platinum. And for the really insane you can get RT2 Platinum, RT3, and SMR for $29.95

Excellent idea, thanks

Thanks Hawk... unfortunately, I have a MINT only used a handful of times copy of SMRR..... to bad it didn't crack instead. I think I'll order the RT3 and Rt2 platinum though.

I was wondering if I could make a back-up copy of my play disk (disk 2) just in case I had a problem with scratches or a crack. The way it sounds that isn't possible due to some sort of copy protection scheme. I guess $10 or so isn't really that much, but it just doesn't sit well with me to pay for a back-up. Just a matter of principle. Any thoughts? :?:

Conomark, you could always try a No-CD crack. That way you can sort of "retire" the CD, which should lower the odds of it cracking or scratching.
