Re: Hi

Welcome aboard from out west, Gandar. I've had the same problem as you. Like Hawk says, you got to find your happy medium. As one of my former teachers used to say, "The hardest thing in all the world is to keep balanced!" Guess that applies in many areas. After you balance the forum time ...

Re: OIL SHORTAGE 101:

I remember in the mid-'60's that one of my grandfathers drove a Nash Rambler (not a station wagon) and I have to say that it ran much more smoothly than the U.S. government! And it did not drive my grandpa to the poor house. ;-)

Re: Questions: How many cities, very long hauls, reserve cells

You're right, Wooly. I had deleted quite a few reserved cells in the metro New York area so that the cities would grow in a condensed form. And I wanted Manhattan Island to look like it was densely built up, even though clear channels are needed for a player to lay his track. I see that the extra ce...

Re: Questions: How many cities, very long hauls, reserve cells

Wooly, you can change the reserve cells and the changes will stay as you save them. I've done that for cities that I place in river valleys where the only track routes into the city do not line up with the 4 arms of the cross of reserved cells. If you want to see samples, load Building to Buffalo in...

Re: Anybody know Mastodon Stats?

WP&P and wsherrick, have you seen the article on the last days of N&W steam which is the cover article in the Spring issue of Classic Trains? That should appeal to you. The website (trains.com then click on Classic Trains) has some short video footage of N&W steam as well. !*th_up*!

Re: Map size discussion

If you are mapping the real world, the size of the map must be related to how much land area the map will include. I am very happy with the scale of my Building to Buffalo map, which (east to west) stretches from New Haven to Erie in 896 (X704). That is a larger map than most that come with RT3, but...

Re: Ultimate Hiking Holiday?

Totally amazing pictures and information! !*00*! Thanks for posting, Redband. I've hiked well over 1,000 miles in the Canadian Rockies, and I've never seen a trail anything like that! Actually, I don't think it qualifies as a trail. In the Canadian national parks, a trail is a path that can be trave...

Re: Hello everyone!

Welcome, Conomark. I, too, like to think of many RT3 scenarios as simulations and not just games. If you haven't tried it already, you might enjoy my scenario Building to Buffalo which simulates the early development of railroads in your corner of the U.S. :-)

Re: RRT 3 as a testing tool

Nedfumpkin, I think you have an excellent idea! Good luck with it. Gwizz, too. I :salute: your efforts. Educators are very slow to put fun in learning. I'm sure I learned more geography in grade 5 from a board game that we could only play during recess, than I did from the classroom teaching the tea...

Re: A Great Article in the Wall Street Journal

Good article in the WSJ. For decades I was a railfan, but knew that railroads were a poor place to invest your money. Now times have changed. I don't follow the financial details of all of them (mostly just CN & CP), but with the recent downturn in stock markets it is likely a good time to inves...

Re: Removing pre-built track/companies

Verrrry clever, wsherrick. I'm impressed with your solutions! :salute: One possible variation I'ld suggest. When you make a new city right next to the old one, you will also get a whole new set of reserved cells while the old ones still remain (they aren't changed when you bull-doze the city). It mi...

Hey, I see I am closing in on my 100th post. That should get me a promotion. What's next - maybe I'll become a brakeman. If you want to know how "Spike" rates the many brands of root beer, check out his page: http://www.rootbeerreviews.com/brews/brewmain.html Then have another root beer! (...

Re: I made it to ENGINEER!!!

I never would have thought of buying my root beer on Amazon! I see the shipping weight is 16lbs. That would add a lot to the cost of getting it to Canada. Sure hope they have a good system for packing those glass bottles to withstand the journey. I like Barq's, too. And it is available in our local ...

Engineer Grindre, I thank you for the tip about Sioux City Sarsparilla. I'll look for it next time I'm down in the midwest, and tip my hat to you when I find it. All root beers are definitely NOT created equal. I love the stuff because my one grandfather usually gave us root beer floats when we came...

Wow! That takes a lot of typing. Certainly this calls for a celebration. I'll hoist a root beer for you on the weekend as I lay some serious track on my computer. (0!!0)

I'm years away from your high position on the right side of the locomotive. So I, a lowly watchman, salute you. :salute:

Re: Getting AI railroads to begin

In my early testing I had AI railroads start up in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. The prebuilt AI's that I added later are almost all in Illinois, so I know there are reasonable starting spots for the other AI's that should start up during the game. I did use the RT2 table to give my prebu...

Getting AI railroads to begin

I am puzzled about AI railroads in my new scenario. Early on I ran several tests of the first 3 or 4 years of the game, and AI railroads popped up in several places on the map as I hoped they would. Then I built the track and stations for several AI railroads that were already in existance at the st...

Re: Cracked disc

I recently decided to buy a 2nd copy of RT3 so I could legally load it on a 2nd computer - and have a backup disc in case the first one got scratched. Thought I should do it while the game was still available commercially. I looked in the usual computer game stores and couldn't find it. So I ended u...

Re: Reviews / Reports of Building to Buffalo

From personal experience I can say that resorts produce passengers and garbage - lots of garbage (including Hawk's empty beverage containers ;-) )! They also need either logs or coal to heat the place, unless they are in a place with a year-round warm climate. :-) They do attract and produce some ma...
