1954 Royal Tour

by (Gumboots)
1930-19541954 Royal Tour

In early 1954, the young Queen Elizabeth made her first visit to Australia. She visited most towns in the country, so she needed transport.

This scenario, loosely based on history, aims to get trains to every town for the great event.

Well, it's the start of the Great Depression. Wonderful time to start a railway. The break of gauge at the Queensland/New South Wales border just adds to the fun.

You must get trains running in both states.

However, Queensland uses narrow gauge, and New South Wales uses standard gauge. Trains from Queensland cannot run in NSW. NSW trains cannot run in Queensland.

The two railways can only connect at Wallangarra. So, you need to set up two companies. One company (either one) has to build a station at Wallangarra. The other company can connect there.

BRONZE - by the end of March, 1954:
1/ Connect Sydney to Brisbane.
2/ Connect Sydney to Canberra.
3/ You run the NSW company.
4/ NSW profits of $20 million.
5/ Qld profits of $4 million.

SILVER - if Bronze is too easy:
1/ Connect Sydney, Brisbane & Canberra.
2/ Connect 24 + NSW towns.
3/ Run trains to every station.
4/ You run the NSW company.
5/ You have no personal debt.
6/ NSW profits of $40 million.
7/ Qld profits of $8 million.

GOLD - the short version is:
1/ Connect every town to Sydney.
2/ Run trains to every station.
3/ You run the NSW company.
4/ You have no personal debt.
5/ You have no company debt.
6/ NSW profits of $60 million.
7/ Qld profits of $12 million.

----- Special conditions -----
Merging companies is not allowed.
If one company goes into liquidation, a third company will have no access.
It may help if you can speak Australian.
Steam locomotives only.

Across the Blue Mountains

Ueber die blauen Berge

by Peter J. (pbenn) Bennet
1855-1880Across the Blue Mountains

Build the first railway in New South Wales! Cross the Blue Mountains! Develop the fabulous potential of the wool industry!

Have fun running trains! Or else!

Welcome to New South Wales!

Those mountains you can see are the Blue Mountains. Just 40 years ago no European had crossed them: now we need a railway to bring out the fabulous wealth of wool that's wandering about, baa-ing gently, on the vast western plains.

The first attempt by the Sydney Railway Company has just collapsed - gold rushes, first in California and then here in Australia, have plundered the labour force; and shortages of finance and materials have finished the company off. Now the Government has stepped in. You have been appointed to finish the job.

There is little local industry, everything has to be imported, so trackbuilding is limited: 100 cells to start, then 100 more each year.

Earn bonuses of 50 more cells for each of:
* 10 loads of wool in a year
* 20 loads of lumber in a year
* 5 loads of steel in a year
* exceeding your annual quota of total loads (the quota grows each year).

GOALS: you have 25 years to...

Bronze: Connect 20 towns, including Bathurst and Sydney, and deliver 5 loads of goods to Bathurst

Silver: Complete Bronze conditions
Connect 25 towns including Sydney
Deliver 10 loads of goods in total to either/both of Goulburn and Muswellbrook

Gold: Complete Silver conditions
Connect all 36 towns to the network
Transport a lifetime total of 150 loads of wool to Sydney, Newcastle and/or Wollongong
Transport 5 loads of goods to either/both of Queanbeyan and Wellington

Conditions: This is a Government railway, so none of that stockmarket malarkey. Just concentrate on the railway business!
(And by the way, watch your debt.)

Across the Blue Mountains

Start date: 1855 (compulsory)
Location: New South Wales, Australia
Author: Peter Bennet, Melbourne, Australia (bennet.peter.j@edumail.vic.gov.au)
Version 1.1: December 2004

Sydney is located on a fertile plain, but hemmed in between the Pacific Ocean and the Blue Mountains, a rugged sandstone range running parallel to the coast. For many years after the colony's foundation no Europeans had even crossed the ranges (although of course the indigenous population travelled freely among them). When they were finally penetrated in 1813 a vast expanse of excellent grazing land was discovered, and by 1855 there are large flocks of sheep out on the Western Plains. So far the cockies have relied on slow, unreliable bullock wagons to bring out the clip, but there is a desperate need for better transport.

The Sydney Railway Company has just gone bust trying to build the colony's first railway. As usual there were various factors, but the main ones were lack of a skilled workforce (competition from gold rushes, first in California and then closer to home in NSW and Victoria), overambitious plans and the expense and delay of shipping materials and equipment from the Old World.

Now the Government has taken over the works and appointed you to get things going. Your goals:

Bronze:
·	Connect Sydney with 19 other towns, including Bathurst
·	Transport 5 loads of goods to Bathurst
Silver:
·	Complete bronze conditions
·	Connect 25 towns
·	Transport a total of 10 loads of goods to either/both of Goulburn and Musswellbrook
Gold:
·	Complete silver conditions
·	Connect all 36 towns
·	Transport a total 5 of loads of goods to either/both of Queanbeyan and Wellington
·	Transport a total of 150 loads of wool to either/any of Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong

Restrictions:
·	This is now a Government railway, so no share or company dealing
·	Construction materials are limited: you get 100 cells of new track each year. This can be increased by an extra 50 cells for exceeding each of these targets within a calendar year:
·	10 loads of wool
·	20 loads of lumber
·	5 loads o steel
·	a quota of total loads, which increases each year (the increment depends on game difficulty level)
(Note: you get an extra 50 cells for each of these targets, so a maximum of 300 per year.)

Geographical note: I've made the map as accurate as I can, but I started with a heightmap from the Mapbuilder which is probably not detailed enough at this scale. Most of it looks right, but I had real trouble resolving the area around Springwood, Katoomba and Lithgow and ended up shifting these slightly to make the climbs more real. If anyone who knows this area (which I don't) is offended by its inaccuracy, I'm happy take submissions!

Railfans note: the ZigZag Railway near Lithgow is a famous and spectacular railway construction, long bypassed by the main line but still running a preserved railway. Check out its website at
http://www.zigzagrailway.com.au/

I hope you enjoy the scenario!

Gründe die erste Eisenbahn in New South Wales! Überquere die Blue Mountains. Entwickle das fabelhafte Potenzial der Woll-Industrie!

Viel Spaß mit dem rasenden Zügen! Oder sonst noch was!

Willkommen in New South Wales!

* 10 Ladungen Wolle/Jahr
* 20 Ladungen Schnittholz/Jahr
* 5 Ladungen Stahl/Jahr
* Eine Quote Gesamtladungen pro Jahr
(Die Quote steigt jedes Jahr)

Du hast 25 Jahre Zeit für

+++ BRONZE +++
Verbinde 20 Städte, incl. Bathurst und Sidney. Liefere 5 Ladungen Stückgut nach Bathurst.

+++ Silber +++
Zusätzlich zu den Bronzezielen:
Verbinde 25 Städte incl. Sidney, liefere 10 Ladungen Stückgut nach Goulburn und/oder Muswellbrook.

+++ Gold +++

Australia All the Way

Australien von A bis Z

1896-1920Australia All the Way

Well, g'day, mate. Glad you could join us. It's near the turn of the century. The 19th century, that is. And Australia is getting ready to bust out.

Politicians say federation is close, and when it comes Australia will need a railroad.

Australian federation is coming. It is just a matter of time. Who better to help out than you, mate?

You operate in New South Wales now, but it's fair dimkum that when the politicians get their act together, tariffs will be removed and you will get the nod!

You have 25 years to connect the entire continent --- and with all the natural resources Australia has, you can build a major railroad empire in the process.

For BRONZE: Connect eastern ports of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.

For SILVER: Meet the Bronze conditons AND connect Canberra, Darwin and Perth. Deliver at least 50 loads of iron and 25 of ore to eastern ports for export. Have a company book value of at least $10 million.

For GOLD: Meet the Silver conditions AND connect Hobart. Deliver 100 loads of iron and 50 of ore to eastern ports. Have a company book value of $25 million.

Nun, G'day, Kamerad! Schön, dass Du Dich uns anschliesst. Wir befinden uns an der Schwelle des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Australia Federation

Australische Föderation

by Peter J. (pbenn) Bennet
1901-1926Australia Federation

Australia Federation. A new nation is created - but alas! No rails.

Can we persuade you to take on the monumental task of linking the capitals?

The colonies of the Australian continent have just federated to create the nation of Australia.

Through a tragic cartographical oversight all existing railways have vanished, leaving the fledgling country without a modern transport system.

Your task is to connect and supply the capital cities of the states and territories with your company's stations and lines.

You have 25 years.

To win medals you accumulate game points by:
* interconnecting the 8 capitals
* carrying a quota of loads to each capital
* earning industry & personal profits
* completing tasks set during the game.

Check your progress on the status page of the ledger.

Gold: 30 points, $20M industry profit, $10M Player Net Worth

Silver: 24 points, $10M IP, $5M PNW

Bronze: 18 points, $1M IP, $500K PNW

The capitals are: Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney. A further mystery destination is yet to be revealed.
(They're identified on the map with asterisks.)

Note: due to the unfortunate presence of stormy Bass Strait, Tasmania is an island and cannot be linked by railway to the mainland. It will be enough to connect Hobart with its hinterland.

1901-1926Australische Föderation

Australia Federation.

+ + + Gold + + +

Die Hauptstädte sind:
Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney.

The Australian territories have just federated and a rail system is needed to connect the capitals with each other and the inland, and transport passengers, industrial raw materials and products. Of course there were actually a number of rail systems in existence (in a number of incompatible gauges!) but you must start afresh. There’ll be droughts, floods, strikes and for all I know plagues of millipedes. You’ll be rewarded for progress but ultimately the risks are your own …

New Zealand

Neuseeland

by David (djrail) Jones
1980-2005New Zealand

New Zealand Rail.

Develop New Zealand's North and South Island railways.

New Zealanders have been making do with ocean transport, both for domestic and for import/export passengers and cargo, but now desire a modern rail transportation option.

They're hoping several enterprising railroaders from around the World will take up the challenge. And while they expect cooperation, to benefit the country, they certainly appreciate the risk of a Tycoon ending up with a monopoly on the island nation!

Connect key cities AND the North and South Islands. The work will be difficult because water routes still can handle cargo traffic.

BRONZE:
Connect the capital city of Wellington to both Westport and Auckland

SILVER:
In addition, make sure Wellington connects Christchurch and Invercargill

GOLD:
And finally, once connections are made, make sure you are HIGHEST in both LIFETIME COMPANY PROFIT and PERSONAL NET WORTH!

To do that you MUST play 25 years!

But, after 10 YEARS once connections are made, you can win Gold INSTANTLY if yours is the ONLY company operating!

Please Note:
a) You can merge companies anytime you like, but GOLD must wait 10 years.

b) You must build connected track.

Welcome to New Zealand, Aotearoa.

The Maori translation is, Land of the Long White Cloud.

This is the North Island, my original home before moving to Australia.

Scenario is fairly easy and you should be able to buy out the competing companies fairly easily. Well, maybe.

Earthquakes can be a problem, so make sure you have resonable cash available at all times. You never know when or where they will strike, but are fairly common, so be warned!

Port of Newcastle

Der Hafen von Newcastle

by Aaron (Glaycyer) Bradford
1900-1930Port of Newcastle

Connect Newcastle to the surrounding regions, while supplying coal to the Port of Newcastle.

The Port of Newcastle is crucial to the economic life of Newcastle and the Hunter Region. Over 70 million tonnes of coal is shipped through the facility each year - making it the largest coal exporting port in the world.

The corporation claims that the Port of Newcastle is Australia's first port. Coal was first exported from the harbour in 1799, 11 years after the start of European settlement in Australia.

Your goal is to contruct a railroad to connect Newcastle to its surrounding regions, whilst also supplying coal to the Port of Newcastle, which consists of the three ports near the cities of Newcastle and Stockton. You can haul the coal to any single, or to any combination, of these ports, just as long as you get it there safe and sound.

-- Special Conditions --
You cannot build unconnected track.
You cannot be fired or resign from the position of chairman.
You cannot start multiple companies.

You have 30 years to achieve the following:

-- Bronze Conditions --
Connect Newcastle to Maitland.
Supply at least 100 loads of coal to the Port of Newcastle.
Haul at least 500 loads of passengers.

-- Silver Conditions --
Connect Newcastle to Maitland and Raymond Terrace.
Supply at least 200 loads of coal to the Port of Newcastle.
Haul at least 800 loads of passengers.

-- Gold Conditions --
Connect Newcastle to Maitland, Raymond Terrace and Nelson Bay.
Supply at least 400 loads of coal to the Port of Newcastle.
Haul at least 1,200 loads of passengers.
Have a Company Debt of $0.

- GOLD-Condition should be checked at end of month, not yearly.

- Events 'RT Markets Win' and 'RT Markets Lose': Hauling produce, milk and livestock should be
checked at end of year, not at the beginning.
Also, the conditions to lose the bonus is formulated the wrong way (some ORs instead of ANDs).

- Event 'IronNotImported': The yearly event about BHB Steelworks should be forced without text
to avoid a newspaper; only the effect is of interest (i.e. to suppress the production of iron
  before 1915).

? Event 'Steel Decline' in 1985? (As you surely know, the scenario goes 25 years from 1900.)

Tasmania

Tasmanien

by (Paulymorph)
1871-1911Tasmania

As the potential profits of Tasmania begin to be realised, can you build a railway that can succeed where so many others have failed?

Tasmania in the late 19th century, the mines are booming, and the apple farms are blooming.

This period of relative prosperity offers the greatest chance to build a railroad which will last the test of time.

Re-write history by establishing a successful railroad, with enough assets to survive when the bottom begins to fall out of the mining industry in 1911.

A word of warning though, Tasmania is small, poor, mountainous and remote. Importing locomotives from Britain is expensive, track building is virtually prohibitive and besides the exploitation of a few resources, there is very little economic development.

Perhaps this is why Tasmanians enjoy their beer so much?

1871-1911Tasmanien

Victorian Rail - 20th Century

Victorianische Eisenbahn 20JH

by Peter J. (pbenn) Bennet
1930-1960+Victorian Rail - 20th Century

Victorian Railways: The 20th Century (v1.0)
Build and run a new rail system to serve the growing state's needs. Lots of demands compete for your attention.

Min 30 yrs, but can extend in 10-yr phases into the 21st century.

Welcome to Victoria, 1930!

Thins have changed in the last half-century: the gold has gone, Australia has become a nation, agriculture and (increasingly) manufacturing have become the economy's foundations. The landscape has changed with increasing population, and many gold towns are now ghost towns, replaced by thriving regional centres.

You have a chance to replace the aging 5' 3" broad gauge with a new standard gauge (4' 8 1/2") system, matching the NSW and Commonwealth systems. You will face a wide variety of at times competing demands. Your task is quite simple - meet the demands!

Note that your priority is to BUILD AND RUN THE SYSTEM. VR is government-owned, so there's no competition. (Society being what it is, there are still rewards for accumulating personal wealth.)

You're scored on a point system. The scenario moves through a series of phases, each with its own quota for medals. Minimum time is 30 years; after that, at the end of each phase you can elect to continue or to claim your medal. Keep an eye on the status page (press 'A') to check your progress.

Good luck!

1930-1960+Victorianische Eisenbahn 20JH

Victorianische Eisenbahnen: Das 20. Jh (v1.0)

Jahrhundert gehen…

Willkommen in Victoria, 1930!

Victorian Railways 1870

Viktorianische Eisenbahnen 1870

by Peter J. (pbenn) Bennet
1870-1895Victorian Railways 1870

The gold rush has brought population and prosperity to south-eastern Australia.

Now we need a canny operator to build a railway network and get industry moving.

Twenty years ago gold was discovered in Victoria. The peaceful and sparsely-peopled colony was rudely jolted as thousands of prospectors poured in from all over the world.

Now prosperity has brought a need for a modern transport system to link up the settlements and allow industry and agriculture to develop.

You can start anywhere, but your goal is to join the capital of Melbourne to the regional centres and country towns. Each regional centre must reach a quota of loads to and from within a calendar year. Your quota depends on the difficulty level you have selected.

The centres are: Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Echuca, Portland, Horsham, Sale, Wodonga, Adelaide (in South Australia) and Sydney (in New South Wales).

For Gold, connect 60 towns and meet all 10 quotas; for Silver, 45 towns and 8 quotas; and for Bronze, 30 towns and 6 quotas.

You must also support industry by carrying a total of 400 loads of clothing (for all meadals), 200 loads of furniture (for Silver & Gold) and 30 loads of goods (for Gold).

Good luck!

Base map: generated in Map Builder

You have a big job: Stacks of people, lots of demand, scattered over large distances - and no transport system. All you have to do is connect the major centres (10 of them) to Melbourne, as well as smaller towns, and generate a minimum level of service (a quota of loads into and out of each centre within a calendar year). And then encourage industry by meeting load goals for certain products.

The colony (later state) of Victoria in south-eastern Australia was a pretty sleepy place in the first half of the 19th century, with a rural economy and small, scattered population. The discovery of gold in the 1850s transformed it enormously, with a huge rush bringing diggers from all over the world. Centres like Ballarat and Bendigo exploded, with dozens of new towns through the Central Highlands; while the ports to serve them blossomed along the coast. Melbourne boomed, always being the largest city.

By 1870 the surface gold was running out and mining shifted to larger, deeper operations. There were lots of opportunities for the necessary supporting industries to develop - importing everything from overseas was expensive and unwieldy. Railways had linked some of the major centres to Melbourne but were expanding rapidly. At the same time agriculture was booming as it attempted to supply not only local demand but exports as well: wool and wheat mainly, but the potential for meat, produce and so on was starting to be developed.

A sidenote on populations: this map went through a whole series of time periods before settling down in 1870. When I consulted the 1871 census data I was surprised to find how many modern towns just hadn't happened yet, or were isolated hamlets; and also how many thriving gold towns then are just hamlets now. So city and town sizes (and in some cases names) reflect those of the 1870s, and areas like South Gippsland and the Mallee are practically empty (of European settlement, at any rate). (See The lost and almost forgotten towns of Central Victoria by Angus Watson, which despite its title contains the full Victorian census data from 1851 to 1901.)

1870-1895Viktorianische Eisenbahnen 1870
