Re: Reviews / Reports of Building to Buffalo

Thanks for the tip, steelm. :salute: I did plant a stadium in Saratoga Springs to try to simulate the major resort there. But I didn't think of trying one of the other buildings you list to accomplish a similar thing on a smaller scale in other places. The multi-story hotels would look strange in th...

Re: Favorite Scenario(s)?

I was going over the 200+ RT3 scenarios I've got on my computer Wow! That is way more than I have. But then my "to play" list is already very long. I've spent most of my RT3 time in the last 10 months developing my own scenarios. Consequently, I've played very few others. My favorite so f...

Re: A small, cozy house

I've lived in Calgary and the winters are very liveable for the north country. I was in Airdire on the weekend, just 10 miles north of Calgary. They had about 4 or 5 inches of snow on the ground. Coldest temperature of the night was -24 C., which is about -11 F. But we were in a cold snap. A chinook...

Re: Rolling Stock skinning ideas

Good idea, Wolverine. Another angle would be an extra charge if a small number of rock loads are not hauled every couple years. If you don't maintain your ballast, your track becomes uneven and you experience more derailments, thus the extra cost. !#2bits#!

Re: Pre-built AI railroads

I can answer 1 of my 2 questions. I ran several 3-year tests and found that maintenance sheds and water towers just do not show up on track that I pre-laid. But when the AI railroads expand on their own from the base I gave them, the new sections of track have the needed service buildings. I still d...

I built it more as a way to test the viability of my fictionalized railroad. Good for you! !**yaaa I have the same idea in mind for my fictional railroads which, if I ever built a large model railroad, would be the center of attraction. I want to try your game out, but I'm deep in the middle of the...

Re: Interesting part of an E-mail

Pardon the long post, please. Years ago I completely read 5 different books (and parts of several others) on Bible translations to try and figure out which one was indeed the best translation. One thing I learned for certain - no matter what the translation, someone has written a book about it claim...

Two suggestions for ya, mate. If you know what you want to do with your event, start a thread in Letters to the Editor and ask, "How do I .......?" Help will be on the way in cyber speed. The other approach works if you've seen the event you like in another game. Put the game on pause, hol...

Re: Interesting part of an E-mail

I'm trying to find that reference. I'll get back to you on this. Sorry! I don't know the Bible as good as I should. Probably none of us know the Bible as well as we should. It is the pursuit of a lifetime. I'm curious about that reference when you find it, as I'm sure I heard or read that idea some...

Re: Handles?

I was a total sports nut growing up in Minnesota (land of Swedes, Norwegians and Finns) in the 1960's when the Minnesota Vikings were an expansion team in the NFL. In 1970 my family moved to the best part of Canada (that would be Alberta), where I have stayed for most of the past 37 years. I'm still...

Re: Brick Background

I like the look and "feel" of the brick. It speaks of old railroad stations, shops and warehouses. My second thought was the same as the grindre, could the color be a faded boxcar red? But I realize the color has to be very light so the text is readable. I think the new paint job is nice -...

Re: Time zones

I suppose a site related to railroads should be fussy about the correct time. Don't want to cause a cornfield meet! Any time is train time - except when you are standing trackside with camera in hand. Then there are no moving trains in sight.

Re: CFL bulbs (Compact fluorescent lamps)

A couple months ago I bought a large pack of CFL bulbs. Thought I would save on my electric bill, and reduce the number of bulbs I have to buy in the future. The first one I installed in a hallway, and the light "burnt out" (i.e. quit working - do they actually burn out?) after only a few ...

Great stories at the top of this thread, Gwizz! And BRAVO for the three intelligent replies. !**yaaa The French engineeer's remarks in the 2nd story are typical of what our predominately liberal media in North America would say. I, for one, had no idea how many ways an aircraft carrier could be of a...

Thanks for the info in your replies, gentlemen. Wsherick, your details were very helpful. Re: Can bridge costs be raised only in 1 territory?

Thanks for the tip, Hawk. It works, although the math in it seems a bit strange. I did some testing before and after creating territories along the Mississippi River. When I increased the cost of bridge building by 300%, the actual cost doubled (rather than tripled). When I increased the cost by 400...
