Re: The Third Republic

Like everyone else, I bought up 3 dairy farms right at the beginning while they were still cheap. I took out bonds and bought them for $350k each, while they each made more than $100k a year, which provided needed early cash infusions and ensured I didn't need to worry about the industry profits req...

Re: Crossing the Alps

As far as I know, wooden bridges slow train speed, but most of my bridges were near my destination anyway so I figured it didn't really matter :-? I've never really put in the thought of express or freight cargo or how passengers really work :-o If I read your post correctly and remember some knowle...

Transport Fever

The game came out recently and the screenshots look interesting; has anyone tried it? It's not entirely railroad related but is in the general railroad tycoon genre, and the graphics look great (not sure about historical accuracy, I've never been a stickler for that ;-) )

Re: Crossing the Alps

I agree with undertoad. In the beginning, there's not much to work with. I started in the Venice-Trieste area but the profits were paltry. I'm not big on buying industry but I took out a bond and bought 3 fruit orchards in the beginning, which were a good deal ($250-400k for $50-75k a year each) and...

Re: Flying Scotsman

Perhaps that may work for me, but I'm wary to try it because I'm already using a custom rt3.exe, and my experience with d3d8.dll is the game irrecoverably crashing and failing to load, which I had to do a reinstall to fix. I actually rarely use the price heatmap anyways, and instead always rely on h...

Re: Flying Scotsman

Nope, I'm playing the whole campaign on Normal. Just for fun, I've connected every city in the visible map, with the exception of Ireland which I don't think I can connect to England due to suspension bridges not being available. The region around Holyhead is pretty mountainous, but even connecting ...

Re: Flying Scotsman

Coming from the last scenario I played, the States of Germany, this map was very easy. Waiting 6 months or so and ditching the Adler 2-2-2 for the faster Firefly 2-2-2 on flat sections and Beuth 2-2-2 for hilly sections means the lifetime average train speed requirement is easily met. I should've be...

Re: Trouble with State of Germany

That is an insane number of cities for a map! I usually check the cargo map for high passenger areas and put my hotels and restaurants in big cities, but I can see how the "snowball effect" of putting hotels in little towns can be made to work. I will try it in my next campaign, given I re...

Re: Trouble with State of Germany

I think Hannover is quite flat, so the Crampton would've been a viable option, but since I started in Bavaria the Beuth seemed a better all-around option. I didn't even buy rights to Prussia on this playthrough. The east side had Berlin and some small towns but with resources as mentioned, while the...

Re: Gaining Personal Net Wealth (PNW)

Thank you, your post was very helpful in clearing up some things, especially the first bit about long term growth and the "common strategy for PNW". I've never been a big fan of PNW or the stock market really. I wish you could buy stocks in industries, instead of buying up individual facto...

Re: Trouble with State of Germany

The wheels are circular, but there appears to be some major distortion of depth. The car behind the tender looks as wide as a house. When I first glanced at the picture I was wondering why there was a building across the tracks. It took me a minute to realise it was a heavily distorted view of an e...

Re: Trouble with State of Germany

Here's a shot I took of the Beuth 2-2-2 when I remembered that I could hide the HUD. The wheels look circular enough for me. :-D

Re: Gaining Personal Net Wealth (PNW)

I think I'm getting the hang of PNW now, but I'm still not sure about some things. In my last campaign I only owned roughly 10% of my company until I met the other requirements, so I was pretty far from the PNW goal. I experimented with dividends but according to another forum thread they're not wor...

Re: Trouble with State of Germany

Alright, I finished at Feb 1871 with only three years left. Revenues really started to increase towards the end of the game to make a win possible. I spent the last year replaying several times manipulating my PNW by buying huge amounts of stock on margin and buying back stock to keep my purchasing ...

Re: Custom Resolution?

Yes, I spent the past hour on the forums looking for a solution and luckily I found one that works. Perhaps one day I'll be able to do more than change two numbers with a hex editor and learn to use a debugger properly. :-D

Re: Patched the blurry texture issue (properly)

The patched rt3.exe worked great for me, and was the only solution that worked as none of the d3d8.dll fixes worked! !$th_u$!

(I've included the file as an attachment in case the original link goes down, which I think is good practice)

Re: Custom Resolution?

The good thing about using a hex editor and not some custom patcher is that I can safely open up the settings pop-up. Just don't change the resolution. I used 80 07 and 38 04 for 1920x1080. It's not that much of a step up from 1600x1024 but I'll take it. Now if only I could appreciate the resolution...

Re: Trouble with State of Germany

I'm partially through my playthrough at 1860, and I'm worried I might not get Gold in time. This campaign definitely seems to be harder than the American scenarios, and only 5 states are connected so far, though the game tends to pick up pace later through the game. Bavaria was my starting state, wh...

Re: Gaining Personal Net Wealth (PNW)

It never occurred to me you had to pay interest on bonds and personal debt, even though it was staring at me right in the face. !facepalm! Definitely ranks among my "learning experiences". It suddenly makes sense to pay off those bonds in exchange for a lower interest rate when rates are l...
