Re: New York to Chicago

Very common in real life for a railroad to build a less-than-suitable high-grade route through the mountains, then when the funds are there improve the route with a tunnel, then later on build more tunnels, etc. to reduce the grade even more. I believe there are some places in the US where you can s...

RRT1 ports?

I will be getting a BlackBerry and doing some traveling as part of my new job. Does anybody know of any ports of RRT1 for compact devices? Would love to be able to play it on my CrackBerry or cell phone while I'm sitting on a train or plane.

Re: Modern Africa

After a few false starts I started in Angola, built a station on the border by the river to capture oil coming down, and built a lumber mill. So far so good.
Now that I know the Red Devil was a real locomotive and not fictional, I feel less guilty buying them.

Re: Causing Trouble On The Railfan Site

Much as I would love to disagree with you,Gwizz- I can't. No new driling, no new refineries, no nuclear power plants, no LNG terminals, nothing. Back a few years ago, when oil prices were way, way down, small oil producers in Western NY and NW PA were forced by environmental regulators to cap their ...

::!**! Awesome! Perhaps I should bring this to the attention of a certian congresscritter on the Transportation & Infrastructure committee. Nice thought about bringing the diesel manufacturers into it. Unfortunately, having seen firsthand the current sad state of American heavy manufacturing, it...

Re: Steam Engine question

The Pittsburg, Shawmut & Northern had one of those "Russian" decapods. #80 was known to her crews as "That ****** bolshevik." Wheras the rest of the Shawmut fleet had extra-large air pumps and huge boiler-mounted air resirvors, #80 had a defective air pump and small resirvoir...

Thanks for the link!

And if the railroad gods don't grant you an 0-6-0 for those jobs, may they at least grant you a shiny new Green Goat.

Re: Causing Trouble On The Railfan Site

I said improperly spec'd locomotives. For example, a 4-8-4 Northern with 80" drivers hooked to a drag freight on a steep grade, against an A-B-B-A set of F3s wasn't a fair contest. N&W 1218, on the other hand, would have fared much better. And a Y6B even better yet. The article I mentioned ...

No- both came preloaded with Windows Vista Home Premium. My daughter has the laptop right now- will post the exact specs later.

Re: Global Warming believers don't read this

My Lady has the sheepskin in the family. Back when she was studying climate science (pre-Global Warming) her professors explained to her that if you kick the global temperature too far either way it triggers an ice age and the system resets. That is what keeps the temperature in the narrow band that...

Re: When it rains it pours

Basically you send it out to a computer expert with a hard drive repair lab, pay from $100 to $500, and they transfer your recovered files to CD/DVD or to a replacement hard drive. If you know somebody in the computer biz that you trust, ask them for a reccomendation. Good luck! Maybe you'll get luc...

Re: Causing Trouble On The Railfan Site

Have been doing some research- just started. China got in a bind recently, just after they sold or scrapped all their QJs: A storm knocked out the electric lines and caternary on their coal lines. Now, no coal is getting to the power plants, so no electricity is being generated, so no coal can be ha...

Re: Extolling the virtues of Vista.

You're preaching to the choir here. Was stupid enough to buy a new desktop and laptop for the family without realizing the nightmare that is Vista Home Premium. !hairpull! On the plus side, my Acer Aspire 5570Z will actually run RRT3 with the 1.06 patch and all the mods. But despite tens of hours of...

Hey! I have all your mods on the Acer Aspire 5570z laptop with Vista home premium. Am running 1.06. Other than the occasional crash to desktop (thank you Autosave) and occasionally switching to the desktop (like hitting the windows button) for no apparent reason, all is fine. No matter what I try, t...

Re: Causing Trouble On The Railfan Site

Wow, I landed on the planet of (fellow) motive power geeks! :salute: Steam is alive, if only barely. Tourist railroads are struggling to keep their near century-old machines running despite all the perils of corrosion, metal fatigue, and non-existent parts support. The Nevada Northern railway is con...

Hello all! I finally got on board with the community here. I am a railroad geek, and not afraid to admit it. I have even described myself as a "recovering model railroader, having gone through the 12 steps, etc." I have been playing RRT1 since the freeware version was released. Was playing...
