Re: Recruiting for real-world rail project

Unfortunately, there's no Hank Reardon around when I need him. That low cost, high strength alloy of his would be just the ticket.

Recruiting for real-world rail project

Hey Gang! I now have a team together to tackle a real-world project. A group of us- in this economy- are going to try to start up a company. The two initial projects are to design and build a prototype biomass fueled modern steam locomotive using some cutting-edge technology, and to try for an opera...

Re: Children are having children

There were a lot of 16 year old moms and 32 year old grandmothers where I grew up. My first girlfriend wanted me to get her pregnant, because then Social Services would pay for her to get an apartment so she wouldn't have to put up with her parent's rules any more, and then we could get married. :sh...

Re: RRT2 over RRT3

To me, RRT2 feels very realistic. RRT3 for some reason feels to me a bit cartoonish. And SMR just plays like a children's game. I played the demo, and everything felt odd- the scale, the graphics, the way city buildings politely move out of the way of the tracks- I just didn't find it to be the kind...

Re: RRT2 over RRT3

Thanks, gang. I just figured out what those little crossed flags are for. Wow! Now I can move cargo across the map. The stockholders kicked my tail to the street when my Denver & Rio Grande got nailed in an economic downturn. Playing in Pennsylvania right now. My Pittsburg & Shawmut i...

Re: RRT2 over RRT3

I just started playing RRT2. So far, the only fault I can find with it is the fact that I can't dump cargo at a station and have another train pick it up. Very frustrating- I would love to drop cars of coal at the foot of the mountains and use fast locomotives to move it across the plains in longer ...

Downloaded it through Steam, and it installed and ran fine on the Vista box with an NVidia graphics card. Not even a whimper.

Re: Hi, I'm Monika

Willkommen, Monika! I enjoy a lot of the same games you do. If you like Age of Empires, try Lords of the Realm II (an older game, but great.) BTW, do NOT buy Lords III, as it was an absolute disaster. Another teriffic game is the open source version of Transport Tycoon. Check out openttd.org - free ...

Re: So what kind of levels excite you?

I play RRT3 (and OpenTTD, and Rails Across America) not so much as a game but as a virtual model railroad. Actually, not even that- I enjoy the simulation of running a real railroad. As much as it might be frustrating trying to lay track in RRT3, I really enjoy the moment when (for example) I get th...

Re: Causing Trouble On The Railfan Site

Hey, if some brilliant scientist makes both internal and external combustion obsolete by inventing a compact, inexpensive fusion power cell that you can drop in place of a fuel cell, good deal. Would add new meaning to the Hummer H3. Until we get that, if we want to go hydrogen, fuel cells...

Re: So how bad is Vista?

What you have run into is file virtualization. I don't really understand it myself, but the idea is that any time you try to save to a folder in Program Files, Vista puts it somewhere safe where it won't get lost. In theory, if there are several users on a Vista machine, you will only be able to see...

Re: Microsoft is re-marketing Vista under a new name.

What's that old country saying about putting lipstick on a pig? Microsoft's problem is that the initial release of Vista was as much of a disaster as the Edsel. Their best option at this point would be to release either a stripped down, patched, thoroughly tested version of Vista (or XP SP4) under a...

Re: Causing Trouble On The Railfan Site

It is theoretically possible to build a compact fusion reactor. But given the complexity, the superconducting magnetic coils, the laser triggers, the radiation shielding, the need of a source of heavy hydrogen as fuel- I doubt it would be able to compete with other modes of power on something as sma...

Re: Be careful what you print on a color laser printer

I heard that years ago. When affordable high-quality color printers came out, Xerox agreed to bury a tiny unique code in the image somewhere, to identify the machine that made the copies. If you had the right paper you could make scary good fake bills cheaply and easily. My wife was in printing at t...

Originally from Western NY (Allegany County) but I'm up here by Albany now. Been through Henrietta a few times. One problem I have seen is kids being told by teachers, guidance counselors, etc. that they MUST get a university degree in order to avoid "working at McDonalds the rest of your life....

Re: Autumn Observations In Your Corner Of The World

Looking like an early Winter. The geese headed South early, the crows are flocking together, and the trees started turning back in August up North (in the Adirondacks.) Was horribly sticky hot last night as the remains of Ike passed by, but tonight it's cool with a beautiful Harvest Moon shining. Th...

Thank you HighVoltage!!!! Did a clean install of RRT3 on the desktop off the CD, then installed the 1.04 beta patch from gamershell, ran it in compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME (disable visual themes) with the " -s9" switch, and it works! Never seen RRT3 with the graphics set all the wa...
