Re: Recycling Plant causing crashes

Just curious about all that complicated looking trackwork I see above. RTIII doesn't let you lay track that close to other track, so I'm guessing you reset the grabbing parameter. I haven't tried your TM Alpha yet, so excuse my ignorance, but does this mean you've also removed double tracking, in or...

Re: Subtleties of Conditions and Effects?

Yup, that's what I did. Just recently figured out that the game keeps track of territory variables separately for each territory, so that if you have 5 territories you have 5x4=20 territory variables, and same for company and player variables. One thing that didn't work in the winter snow event is t...

Re: Weird behavior... do I need to reinstall or something?

Alright, I was wondering. Must've been a big job putting 1.06 together, and overall I'm happy with it. Btw, I'm running on XP, so I suppose I have it good! One other oddity which is more frustrating, when I'm entering the Briefing and it starts to get kind of long once I leave the page and come back...

Weird behavior... do I need to reinstall or something?

Been noticing a lot of weird behavior with RTIII and I'm wondering if it's just me and if there's anything I can or should do about it. Let me describe. One thing. When in the Editor I select industries I want to have in my scenario, right? But sometimes when I go back to the industries page the sel...

Re: Subtleties of Conditions and Effects?

Ah, good idea with the two events method here, I'll try that approach. The extra force test against territories condition wouldn't work, though, since I'm already testing against a territory...

Re: Subtleties of Conditions and Effects?

Thanks for the prompt responses, fellas. Yes, I've inspected what you both did previously, and was partly inspired by that to do this. Also by the real life fact that no trains ran in the winter on this particular route. But looking at what somebody has done and being comfortable doing it yourself a...

Subtleties of Conditions and Effects?

So I'd like to get a handle on the various boxes you can check and everything else about conditions and effects. I'll use an example from a scenario I'm working on now to get started. I may be back to this topic ofter, I suspect, until I feel a lot more comfortable than I do now. So, I want to halt ...

Re: Preventing Construction Firms from being built

Sounds like the answer is no, Wolvy. But don't worry too much, if I don't want a construction firm in my town (because I own the furniture factory there or the T&D) I just have to make the decision a la James Hill whether the annoyance is worth the cost of razing the firm. I pretty regularly do ...

Re: Shipping Corn

Only once or twice that I can recall. Both time in the campaign, I think, before I became more of a lazy player. The early Britain scenario and the Africa scenario. Africa because I had bought some Cattle Ranches and wanted to boost my revenues from them. I forget but maybe the Britain scenario had ...

Re: British Miracle

Aha! I thought the goals were a little high. I try to be an "honest" player when there are hauling goals and not use custom consists to beef up my numbers. Great scenario otherwise, very enjoyable through 1855 at least (where I'm at now with only like 300 goods hauled so far, about 20/yr s...

Re: Ecuador - a first attempt at scenario building

Thanks for the tips! I was pretty sure I had a poor understanding of which boxes to check in the event triggers. And glad you mostly enjoyed it. Yes, I thought it was a bit tedious after about 2/3 through, but I'm glad you picked up on the almost necessary strategy of razing industries that kept you...

Re: Cropping and altering maps

Okay then. I see Gimp likes to use cubic interpolation by default. I'll try the other options and see if that helps. Edit: Well, looks like it doesn't matter what kind of interpolation I use. But it DOES matter whether I create Grayscale maps which are scaled locally vs globally. Stay away from that...

Re: Cropping and altering maps

So I'm reviving this dead topic because I have a new question which falls under this heading. I'm looking for help with cropping and rescaling. I figured that this must be possible since MapMaker suggests rescaling with Photoshop to get your map properly proportioned (ie so that a mile in any direct...

How do I include a new portrait with my scenario?

Okay, so I found the Player Portrait application in the User Skinning Tools folder. I think I can add a portrait to my own game with this, I'm about to find out. But it looks like it would be hard to include a new portrait with a scenario, which is really my goal. Any hints on how this is accomplish...

Re: Favorite routing layouts for connecting cities

Yes, it also depends on available cargo and how many loads your engines can haul efficiently. If not much cargo, one train running 1-2-3-2-1-3 will all get back and forth traffic between each pair of cities. Basically the same thing, but I somewhat prefer 1-2-1-3-2-3 for that.

Favorite routing layouts for connecting cities

Sorry for overwhelming the list here... But I just thought it might be fun to discuss favorite track laying/routing strategies for connecting nearby cities. The straight orientation is usually obvious. I tend to identify 3 cities in a row with larger cities on the ends ideally and run one train 1-2-...

Straight track vs careful grading

Just wondering what everybody thinks the best track laying strategy is looking at straight tracks v careful grading. Sure, a lot of trains slow down when they hit a grade, but not so much if it's only a few sections, right? And trains also slow down when they hit a curve, though not nearly as much o...

Re: Scenario testing without playing through?

Well, I was a Wolverine in Columbus for a while, if you can imagine that. Even though it was my high school mascot, and had no relation to Ann Arbor, I still caught hell walking around campus with my old cross country shirts on, etc. Never really did call myself a Buckeye. That was back in the day w...

Re: Adding buildings with events

It would be nice if there was a Great Cathedral or Religious Shrine building to add which would strongly attract traffic from everywhere (like 10 or 15 consume/produce), but alas, I don't see them in the building list... though I hear there's some way to make buildings, that would mean you'd have to...

Re: Adding buildings with events

Thanks Grandma Ruth, good idea! And I want to do this for two reasons, both for the passenger traffic bonus, and as part of the scenario theme, which tries to highlight the significance of the Roman Catholic Church in Latin America. If you tithe, the Church builds churches. And EVERYBODY goes to chu...
