Re: New Beginnings
Very interesting points, thanks for your reply! I was inspired to criticise this scenario (while in no way being an experienced or even qualified scenario builder myself) by some interesting comments Gumboots made on the CPR thread. These built-in campaigns and scenarios can have flaws as well. You'...

Re: New Beginnings
I'm finding this scenario quite frustrating. The premise is a good one: you have Europe from Poland and Austria in the East to France and part of the UK as a stamping ground, some interesting modern industries (Auto plants, Recycling, Chemical factories, nuclear fuel) to carry, and nice (but expensi...

Re: Central Pacific
Nice work finding the road up the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Pass ! (I think this route up to Reno is the real Donner Pass, where CPR laid its rails IRL). I thought I'd managed to find a pretty good road up there (trying to screenshot from as close to the same viewpoint as I can manage): D...

Re: Passengers in Railroad Tycoon III
This is a great thread! Perhaps one day, collectively, this forum will get to the bottom of the Mystery Wrapped In An Enigma that is the RRT3 passenger model. Or perhaps not... ^**lylgh Been pondering something else about passenger behaviour. Sometimes I've been checking stations on a map, and seen ...

Re: Events not being processed
I'm enjoying laying track in the Sierras after Gold on CPR. Your problem is that once one of the medals have fired, no more events will be processed. Like it or not, that's the way the game is. This is why I normally save a game just before I get the Gold Medal. That way if I want to keep playing t...

Re: Events not being processed
Update on this mysterious problem: NONE of the regular periodic events are being triggered, not even the pre-built ones that came with the campaign. I checked this by finding a pre-built event which was set to Monthly (start of month). This was processed 212 times since the start (Event Debugging sc...

Events not being processed
Hi all I'm just beginning to mess around with events to get to understand them. I've read Oilcan's (as usual :-D ) excellent guide to writing events. I'm not doing anything very complicated (e.g. with variables): just trying to make one thing happen on a certain date. I'm enjoying laying track in th...

Re: RRT3 crashing
Hello again! Did you try Oilcan's trick of setting up trains between the Steel Mills so that they make a round trip hauling Iron in one direction and Coal in the other? It's a nifty little trick. Also, I realized that a big stack of Coal at a Steel Mill at low price is a great source of short-term p...

Re: RRT3 crashing
Hi Hawk Thanks for the reply. Where did you get information that RT3 is actually using both processors? From Task Manager. Overall, RRT3.exe is using about 50-55% CPU. This is the only heavy CPU usage going on (apart from 1-2% processes that blip in and out of existence on the Processes list). When ...

Re: RRT3 crashing
As the author of Michigan 1830 I can answer these two questions. The map is sparse because in 1830 Michigan was still a territory and was pretty much a "wilderness". I've set the growth rate somewhat on the high side for the first 20 years so while it starts out slow and you have to be ju...

Re: RRT3 crashing
Hello again, and thanks for the reply! That's interesting that you too are getting the crash in the Ledger Train List. Reassuring, in a way, in that it's not just my ancient machine that has this problem. But bad news in another, in that your better machine doesn't solve this problem. It would be gr...

Re: RRT3 crashing
Hello again! Thanks for the reply and those save games. Here are the results: 1. Michigan 1830 This took a whole 5 minutes to load on my machine! But loaded with no problems. But funnily enough, once in, it ran beautifully , at least in my terms. I generally play at Slow or Very Slow speed at this s...

Re: RRT3 crashing
Hi RulerOfRail! Thanks for your reply. I have two questions: Are there any AI on the map? Do they have any trains? Have you found this problem on other maps as well, or just this one? If you want I could dig up some big saved games if you want to quickly try some different maps. At this point there ...

RRT3 crashing
Hi I hope I'm in the right forum here for "RT3 is behaving strangely" problems. My current RRT3 game is becoming a bit unstable. Here are the symptoms: - Bulldoze becomes extremely slow and unresponsive. Bulldozing just one piece of track (or maybe a service tower) is a matter of "poi...

Re: Short-selling for cash
That's the most detailed strategy for short-selling I have seen. Well done. Just wondering, do you realize that Short-selling uses up Purchasing Power? Thanks! No, I didn't realise about the effect on PP until you pointed it out. I was just looking at the personal cash position, and trying to avoid...

Re: Short-selling for cash
I have also tried and tried to back a rival tycoon over the bankruptcy cliff with short selling, but it never seems to work. I will certainly start paying more attention to the earnings per share trend line. Again, thanks for a very descriptive, and fresh, outlook on short selling. Hi Oilcan Thanks...

Re: Map Editing: A few Questions.
That's a whole lot of fantastic information in your post - thanks! This sounded familiar to me: Unfortunately, the price modifier events for RT3 are bugged as well. At this stage I suspect that there is a bug not in the events themselves, but in the formulas for demand transmission between sta...

Re: Map Editing: A few Questions.
1. Is it possible to create an event that triggers when a train arrives at a station? 2. Is it possible to create an event effect that writes to, or appends to, a .csv file of my own creation? (I like to track my company's performance using MS Access, including stats on each train arrival. I append...

Short-selling for cash
Hello to all the tycoons here! I'm back here after a couple of years - nice to see the forums still busy! Re: Ghost industries; and rail yards
Hi Oilcan Thanks for your comments. You're preaching to the converted - I've read your excellent handbook several times, and refer back to it on occasion! The "thieving" I talk about happens after I've completed the "pickpocket" phase - I've stolen all their resources, and the &q...
