Multi-Player and The Patch

I think Milo said somewhere that The Patch might make Multiplayer impossible. Even if GameSpy is pretty dead, I do enjoy the occasional multiplayer game with a friend in Germany. Maybe there is an elegant way of having the cake and eating it, too: I could imagine a simple batch file (or whatever it ...

Things I don't understand

I either don’t understand what this means, or I don’t get the point. • let AI take over/sabotage other companies (milo) [30%,C,days] - May require scripted AI Sabotage? Like, how? • add specialized stations, or at least cargo-controlled stations (JSS) [50%,ACF,days] What are cargo-controlled...

Things about which I have reservations

Items that might affect game balance. • add personally-owned industries (JSS, davey917) [20%,C,weeks] - Requires a whole new page in ledger, among other things If this allows the player to make loads of money outside of the current game mechanics, this might mess with scenarios that require PNW. I...

Things that should not get patched

ECONOMIC MODEL • be able to run railroad without investing in industry (JSS, CJNyfalt) [90%,C?S,hours] - Probably fixable in scenario - disable industry build/buy, cut price of rails and engines Exactly – this can be adjusted by the player with one event. Besides, this is something entirely dep...

Things that should be made optional for player and mapmaker

These things should not be hard-coded, but should be made optional. The player should be given a choice to enable or disable them – in the same way that you can currently freeze night-day cycles or weather, when you play in sandbox mode. The mapmaker should be given events to override these player...

Things that seem uncontroversial

In my view, these would be unabridged blessings that would neither mess with game balance, nor with scenario design. I won’t mind if we don’t get these tools, either, though. • give player option to freeze AI after company 51% owned (ExpressWorld) [20%,C,days] • let AI take over/sabotage oth...

Things that might be neat

These are things I would welcome, but would not sell my grandmother for. • fix AI's inability to recover from damaged track (milo) [30%,C,weeks] • be able to write AI's algorithm using scripting language (milo) [30%,C,weeks] - Requires nearly same work as scripted events; may slow down game • ...

Things I want badly

These items would mean major improvements of my game-play and/or map-making experience. • improve AI's track-laying algorithm (CJNyfalt, milo) [30%,C,weeks] - May require scripted AI • improve AI's business sense (Grandma Ruth) [30%,C,days] - May require scripted AI • optionally specify goals ...

On organizing the discussion

I would like to give my two cents in a number of posts. I am grouping this in categories that seem to make sense to me from where we are, currently, in our discussion. If you all decide to organize the debate in different categories, perhaps ones that make more sense from the point of view of progra...

I would love to hear more about this. I think the problem was, on the L&N map, that the Mogul didn't come up, since I had not checked "make all North Am. engines available." As a map maker and control freak, I guess I prefer to be in charge of picking the engines a player can use. :tw...

Default persistent drought in the absence of a new storm is not a problem in my view. The only scenarioes where this would matter would be tropical ones, and there, the drought period DOES in fact end with a bang.
I would like to implement this in Namibia and Burma.

Just voted "yes". It is an extremely neat addition! I did decide, though, not to activate many of the modifications for existing engines, because they do tend to mess with game balance. Especially not having the consolidation available in the 1860s makes some scenarios much harder to win, ...

Re: Start storm = FALSE; rain questions

I have made beginning of month events where one of the effects is Start storm = false, but when the event (announcing a drought) triggers, it starts to rain. Anyone know... Are the random rainshowers storms or just random rain. Can we prevent them? Are storms a similar thing but different, being no...

Merci for your comments, bombardiere! Terrain deformation is of course a pain, and even though I try to shape the landscape in ways that minimize its impact, it does sometimes mess things up, even post-patch. I am delighted, though, that you like the landscaping! This was actually quite a project. F...

I went back to this map to figure out some advice to share here. I soon discovered a major bug that caused player-owned farms and mines to stop producing after April 1861. I will send Hawk a revised version that eradicates that bug, and streamlines the Civil War-events, in general. Watch out for tha...

First of all, I'd like to say that I am delighted that people are still playing this map, and that it still manages to stump a few of you. 8) I pretty much agree with the strategies described by JayEff and EPH. That's how I've often done it. Besides, you really don't want to get stuck with no track,...
