Re: College degrees not important

One problem I have seen is kids being told by teachers, guidance counselors, etc. that they MUST get a university degree in order to avoid "working at McDonalds the rest of your life." In order to pay the loans on said university degree, the kids need to get a degree in something that pays...

Yeah. I got so frustrated with this one I gave up. Eventually I will get up enough ambition to rewrite the scenario so it's winnable.

Re: Loco suggestion

Yeah. When DLM AG built new rack locos for the tourist lines in the alps, they set them up for "light oil" (diesel/distillage) firing. They were required to do emissions testing. They were so surprised at the results, they did it again: http://www.dlm-ag.ch/index2_nonjava-en.htm Problem is...

Re: Model Railroading Games

Auran's Trainz works that way. It's based on "baseboards" - you can use one for a tiny layout, 2 or 3 for a normal sized layout, eight or ten for a huge layout, or put together dozens and build real-life scale routes. Some of the pre-built railroads are based on model layouts. Be advised, ...

Re: NEW steam locomotive takes to the rails

To make matters even more interesting, I ran the numbers the other day, and as of this spring, wood pellets are cheaper per BTU than #2 fuel oil (diesel). And that's a renewable resource we already have available. Forget "light oil" firing. Design a Stephensonian steam loco to fire with wo...

NEW steam locomotive takes to the rails

http://www.a1steam.com/ After 18 years, the Tornado , the 50th Peppercorn-class LNER A1 Pacific, takes to the rails tomorrow. All of the 49 original locomotives, some of the most advanced and reliable steam locos ever, were scrapped. DLM AG http://www.dlm-ag.ch/ is still building steam locomotives, ...

Re: Did you give your childern an odd or funny name?

One of the children delivered by the same doctor who delivered my daughter is named Female (pronounced "Fehm-ah-lay".) The mother hadn't picked a name by the time she left the hospital, so the birth certificate said "Female" and the mother's last name. The mother thought it a nic...

Re: Which would you choose?

I actually had to trade in my 6-cylinder '98 Explorer for a '99 Honda Civic. I figured at $3.50 per gallon the difference in the mileage would make the car payment. Lately regular unleaded is as much as $4.19 around here, so it was a smart decision. "Chitty " (the new car) is supernaturall...

Re: No You Can't Ride In The Vestibule_Please Take Your Seat

There was a gorgeous old wood/coal stove in the camp that I used to co-own with my brother-in-law. Isinglass windows, ornate nickel trim, grate shaker, clinker breaker- the whole nine yards (no brick arch, though.) Looked like it came out of the waiting room of a depot somewhere, right down to the b...

Re: Look what happens when you try to do good things

Here in New York State, we have a dedicated highway fund, a so-called "locked box" where dedicated transportation revenues such as motor fuel taxes, ton/mile taxes on trucks, motor vehicle registration fees (based on weight) etc. are supposed to go and be used only for transportation. And ...

Re: Civilizaton IV:Beyond the Sword.

Thanks for the update! Going to wait until Civ 5 comes out, then buy the "complete collection" of Civ 4 with all the expansion packs for less than the original game cost. Extract from an interview with Sid Meier on GameDaily (June 9th, 2008) 9. You've confirmed that there will be a Civiliz...

Re: Does this seem like a legitimate strategy ...?

That's a problem I have in the "last company standing" scenarios- once the AI gets control of their company, you're done. Starting another company to build industries is good- starve out the AI. Also, build tracks paralell to the AI, just connecting at their stations. Then steal all their ...

Welcome! Hopefully trains moving on fixed routes in two dimensions at 79 mph or less (generally) will be less stressfull than aircraft moving at 600 mph in 3D and wandering all over the sky. On the downside, you can't order a coal drag to change altitude to avoid the hot intermodal coming the other ...

Going to wait until Civ 5 comes out, then buy the "complete collection" of Civ 4 with all the expansion packs for less than the original game cost. Played a lot of Civ 2 and 3. I miss the SciFi & Fantasy scenarios from Civ 2. Among the odd things I have had happen in Civ3: I was playin...

Mental illness from too much RRT3?

Been playing a lot of RRT3 lately. Last weekend, we were visiting friends in a distant (and rail-less) town. I was getting somewhat bored when I suddenly heard the sound of wheels on stick rail. What? I could have sworn they pulled up the nearest rails ten years ago! I went out on the patio, and- no...

It worked as advertised. After a couple of tries, Buster shot into the air, met the barrel halfway, hit the pulley, the bottom of the barrel failed when it hit the ground, Buster fell, met the barrel halfway down, hit the ground, let go of the rope, and was hit by the falling barrel. A friend ...

Southern States USA- scenaro bug?

Okay, started this one again after quite awhile. When New Orleans fell, (spoiler) all tracks, trains and stations were destroyed. No problem- company has plenty of cash, time to rebuild. But- It's a no unconnected track scenario. I can't build a new station to start over!!! Tried waiting until the w...

Re: Reviews of Building to the Great West

Awesome scenario. Fun and challenging. First couple tries I never got out of the gate on medium. Third try I ended up just shy of Council Bluffs- ran out of track and time. The war years were actually fun and profitable, unlike some other scenarios.

Re: Building to the Great West

Just finished my first complete game of this scenario. Made a couple mistakes- ran North to Milwaukee, and built feeder/branch lines- that turned out to be suicide. Went South to Alton/St.Louis, then West to KC. Ended up just shy of Council Bluffs and got booted. Really pays to expand fast in this o...
