Re: 1.06 Mogul deborkification und skinz

Since it is flammable, I like to think of it as "fire starter"... or maybe that's "fight starter"

Re: Evil Genius at work

You can also find a slew of locos at TrainSim.com, but you'll most likely find them too high poly also. http://www.trainsim.com/vbts/tslib.php?do=displayviewsec Much thanks for the link, Hawk! I'll take a look. Worst case scenario, I'll have excellent guides to use for modelling low-poly versions. :D

Re: Question about double-heading.

There were a couple of solutions used in that era, arguably three solutions, but more on that later. All told, I have not seen very many photos of double-headed Connies or Americans in the period. One work around was to use a knuckle coupling on a longer bar at the fore of the back engine, or on the...

Re: 1.06 Mogul deborkification und skinz

As I sit here with a high-poly model I made 9 years ago open in the editor pondering how to get 46k polys reduced to something that will work in RT3, believe me, I very much understand your dilemma. Sitting here, there is that a part of me that keeps asking "did you really need to make every bo...

Re: Evil Genius at work

The fact it is diesel also bothers me. In 2003, there were already maglev trains in operation and the principle of maglev trains has been around since the 1910s. So why not electric at the very least? Granted, the Catenary/OHLE system used in the game is a bit out of step with 3rd rail electrics, w...

Re: Evil Genius at work

I went snooping around mod sites for locomotives and rolling stock in other games and found (much to my surprise) that there are train mods for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas . After a bit of snooping, I saw the GTA:SA loco mods are vastly too high poly to import into RT3 - averaging about 10k triang...

Re: Evil Genius at work

Looking at the model for the DD 080-X (named "FutureL" in the game files), is something of an exercise in disappointment. I'd never played with the DD 080-X much, so I didn't notice that it only has double-bogie trucks. I guess I should have known that from the name, DD and 080 (e.g., 0-8-...

I can't remember where you mentioned it, but you said you were keen on the old "shark nose" diesels. I just stumbled across this page while looking for something else. Might be useful to you. !*th_up*! Passenger Shark Painting & Lettering Much thanks! I have one roughed out and these ...

Re: 1.06 Mogul deborkification und skinz

I know what you mean by that "feel your way in the dark" comment. The American 4-4-0 is weird too. I guess PopTop felt it was necessary to have the American 4-4-0 in RT3 since both locomotives present at the Golden Spike Ceremony celebrating the completion of the First Transcontinental Rai...

Re: Future Trains?

Yeah, concept art is usually full of the impractical and downright silly. 70c10cd917235ccb0b6d5668f90e34e9.jpg The retrofuturist stuff covers a wide spectrum of looks, that's just one at random. The New York Central Mercury and PRR S1, for instance, are full-on retrofuturist in design. But then you ...

Re: Future Trains?

I'm familiar with Daniel Simon's designs, they're phenomenal. But I haven't seen any train/rail designs by him yet (and I looked) or I'd have included him. Sadly, I'm the "have to see it to make it" sort, so more the draughtsman than the artist. So I went with what I could "see" ...

Re: Evil Genius at work

Just ordered The Train GIANT , Railroad Pioneer , Loco-commotion , Loco Mania and Train Empire from a seller on ebay. Old games though they may be, all but Railroad Pioneer are new titles to me. Now we just have to see if any of them are good. :D And I hear you about Trainz. There are a mind-numbing...

Re: Evil Genius at work

On the topic of "a new game to play", I've played Chris Sawyer's Locomotion and wasn't greatly impressed. It has an almost antique look to it compared any other game released in the same year (2004). To me, it looks more like SimCity 2000 (released 1995) than a 2004 release rightly should....

Re: Speed adjustment considerations

LOL Sleep much? That's quite a list of locos. Mine goes something like this: Cherpanov 0-4-0 (completed, not happy with the textures) Steam Elephant 0-6-0 (all but done, stalled due to lack of animations on the beams) John Bull 0-4-0 and 4-2-0 versions (stalled at about 90% completion) DeWitt Clinto...

Re: Evil Genius at work

Agreed, the track laying tools in SMR are much better in terms of controlling the grade, but weak on actually managing traffic in a realistic manner since trains do not use double track properly. In my experience with SMR, double track is only useful near stations. I agree with you about the scaling...

Heh. I guess it figures that if it's iconic and steam, you'd have it already modeled.
