RRT3 copy protection not compatible with new Windows versions?

Railroad Tycoon 2 had a very nasty copy protection system which killed the game when it detected *anything* "suspicious". For example, installing the legal Nero CD-burning suite killed RRT2 for me. Railroad Tycoon 3 wasn't quite as difficult for us. Still, there are "No-CD" patch...

Re: The infamous low res gfx problem.

Nice work! !**yaaa

The text you found looks like the hidden special version of "show fps" option I used to check for the VRAM in use and soe other statistics of the graphics engine.

Re: RT3 running on Windows 7

So true. I have now tested my own Great China 4 map for TrainMaster for two years and hundreds and hundreds of hours, fixing this and that, adding things, trying countless strategies - never had a dull moment! So, at least for myself, the end result has been about as great as I can hope. :) Yes, the...

Re: The infamous low res gfx problem.

What is certain: in special debug or info-mode RRT3 reported having a *negative (!)* amount of VRAM with my Nvidia card... This would explain why the game chooses the lowest settings. With all the AMDs, it reports the correct amount. Also, since they run hi-res graphics with T&L enabled (i.e. no...

Re: The infamous low res gfx problem.

Ok then, we can eliminate the "too much RAM" myth from consideration. There's no need for anyone to ever mention that one again. Myth busted. The problem has to be something else. I'm currently running one of these - GeForce GT 630 Specifications - in the DDR3 version on Window 7 64 bit. ...

Re: The infamous low res gfx problem.

The problem is not in having too much VRAM. I have confirmed this with nicely working 3 AMD Radeon cards, with 1, 1 and 2 GB. However, the problem did occur in my Nvidia card with 768 MB... Strange. RRT3 utilizes only up to 256 MB VRAM (I measured recently). Therefore it just might have trouble with...

Re: RRT3 performance and compatibility in modern computers

Thanks for the comments! (0!!0) I believe RRT3 is pretty much limited by its memory management. The GPU, to my surprise, doesn't even seem to use its full 3D speed for most of the time, but instead idles at 300 MHz or so no matter what is happening on screen. I also noticed no difference whether I u...

RRT3 performance and compatibility in modern computers

I have tried to learn and understand why RRT3 and its more advanced sister TrainMaster behave the way they do in today's computers, after a decade or more since they were developed. This thread is about my (and other people's) findings. I just upgraded my AMD Radeon HD5850 graphics card to AMD Radeo...

Pretty repetitive, too, in the end. Nice idea, though.

Re: New Railroad Game...Overdue

I contacted Phil once myself a while back and pretty much got the same response. We even had a couple of the developers as members here for a while. Well, they're still members but haven't stopped by for quite some time. It would be interesting to hear from Phil or the other devs whether certain pr...

Re: New Railroad Game...Overdue

Is it just (hopeful) me, or do the others see something that looks very much like what Railroad Tycoon 4 might look like on one of the Cascade Game Foundry's web pages..? :) I'm pretty certain they are cooking something interesting there now in any case. In one e-mail they sent me, trains were clear...

Re: New Railroad Game...Overdue

Run8 seems to me like a simulation for really hardcore simulation fans. Ones who want absolute realism to the point where things can become quite complicated. Rewarding, too, I suppose, once you go through the learning curve + have the time.

Re: New Railroad Game...Overdue

Cascade Game Foundry, the team responsible for the cancelled Microsoft Train Simulator 2, is up to something related to trains and simulation. We should hear more pretty soon, they say.

Re: RT3 running on Windows 7

It's a small enough zip I can attach it to this post, along with the read me. Ugh. Good news: I have managed to start my RT3!!! ::!**! (On Win 7, downloaded from Steam!) Bad news: I don't know what I had done exactly... ;) 1. Buy, download from Steam --> Game crashed when start (as expected) 2. Use...

Re: Another new member

Despite this being a little off-topic, yes, there was Great China 3, indeed - I just wasn't happy about it, and thus re-built it completely. There were even earlier versions called "China Ultimate" 1 & 2, but those have nothing to do with GC4 except the same map size. Everything else i...

Re: Another new member

Tervetuloa! :-D (welcome in Finnish) And if you need a different kind of a RRT3 challenge, there is a BIG one coming out, years in making, very soon... The testing of Great China 4 is now finally done after countless hundreds of hours, and I'm now finishing the 20+ page PDF manual. :) A part of that...
