I will start working now on a 1024x1024 new mexico map with every county and county seat! :) :-D

What range of years are you thinking? Unless you're doing a fairly modern or futuristic map, I'm pretty sure rail service for most of NM isn't historically accurate. But then again this could be said about most scenarios...

Also, as much as I'm frequently tempted to go for richness of detail on a maximum size map, the feedback I've heard is that many people won't play these maps. For for the sake of being able to share my creation with more people, I've been trying to keep my maps down to the recommended maximum scale of 768x768 or 512x1024. When I look back at the best scenario's I've played, I'm often surprised to discover that they're frequently 512x512 or smaller, though they felt giant when I played them!

Of course don't let me dissuade you from your passion if you're just going for the uber-fan NM map!
