My days of hiking are over, as well as my dream of tackling the Appalachian Trail. 
I don't believe I'd want to go to China even if I did still hike a lot.

Some of those trails seem to go straight up.

Totally amazing pictures and information! Thanks for posting, Redband. I've hiked well over 1,000 miles in the Canadian Rockies, and I've never seen a trail anything like that! Actually, I don't think it qualifies as a trail. In the Canadian national parks, a trail is a path that can be travelled in an upright position without use of hands at all. This Chinese ascent is what we call an alpine route; the way is clearly marked and climbing ropes and pitons are not needed, but you do have to use your hands and you are exposed to percipitous drop-offs! I can handle that for short distances, but I don't think I'll be going over to China to try this one! But perhaps the producers of Fear Factor should be made to climb it on their vacation.
