Well i just decided to install Railroad Tycoon 3 on my new (well just over a year old now) desktop, which runs Windows 7, 64 bit.

It seems to run fine (without even needing compatibility mode) when i run version 1.0 (the one straight from the cd).
However, the game stops working after I update the game to 1.04 with the Coast to Coast expansion.
After installing C2C, the game crashes either part way through the opening video, or just after the main menu appears if you skip the video,

with the generic Microsoft error shown below coming up

Image

If i click on problem details i get;
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: RT3.exe
Application Version: 1.0.0.1
Application Timestamp: 00000000
Fault Module Name: RT3.exe

BTW I have NOT installed railroad tycoon into program files, but rather in its own independent folder.

Any ideas? Thanks

Try installing the Vista fix zip file. That might work.

And also don't stop and go to - at least - patch 1.05. Till Vista and W7 have arrived, I've never played below 1.05 ... and also I've not run into problems on them concerning RT3 (with Vista fix, of course).
There's no business like RT business ...

The Vista fix isn't really a patch. I just has a cfg file that works on Vista.

After struggling to install the game under Windows 7, I tried some of the tips here. Install from CD, 'Disable hardware T&L', patch 1.05. Then had a great evening playing RT3 for the first time in ages.

Now, tonight, however I try to start the game, it crashes straight after the introductory video - as described by several people here.

Very frustrating! What should I try next?

Did you install the game outside of the Program Files or the Program Files (86) directory, which would have been the default installation choice?

Do you let Windows automatically install from Windows Update?

Try the Vista fix file posted above. Sounds like your T&L reverted back.

One thing about RRT3... It has a very nasty copy protection system which disagrees with many legal programs, especially some CD-burning and "virtual CD/DVD drive" applications. I'd recommend trying TrainMaster edition of RRT3. If that one works (it handles these things differently), then... Hmmm. Anyway, trying TM is definitely worth the time and effort. I prefer that over the "normal" RRT3 anyway.

Btw, a very quick one regarding Windows 8: TrainMaster seems to work under that one, too. I just had to remove the W8 Consumer Beta due to other serious problems with my system (like: no sound).

I was just going to comment about Windows 8. Under the beta RT3 1.05 seems to work just fine at least with my hardware. I made a partition so I could dual boot and go back to vista if/when needed. Windows 8 definitely needs some work as this OS is geared too much towards tablets/phones.

Everything I've read about Win 8, that's intentional and it probably won't change.

Very true, windows 7 may become the next XP and be around for 10 years if windows 8 becomes more geared for tablets/phones. A lot is similiar to win7 once you get to the desktop, but the start button/bar goes back to the other interface based more for tablets..

Basically, nothing (important) has really improved there from W7 - but some user interface solutions feel quite awkward to me. Who needs an app store? Not me - in a normal PC - but in the future, who knows. The saying "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" applies here; W7 is, despite its bugs, quite an ok operating system.

Have you tried, successfully or not, to apply any patches to the Steam version?
